I have a possible purchase and have the product ID from the owner but the dealer couldn't identify the exact model - only the purchase date and location.

It is a 2005 790 4WD and the owner claims it is 35HP. I don't see anywhere that there was a 35HP model in 2005. I know there was a 30HP and that is what I think this one is.

Anyone know for sure what models were made that year? TractorData even says there was a HST model?

I want to be sure before driving 2 hours to look at it.

Thanks

27 Gross Engine HP and 24 PTO HP. The "30 HP" 790's were the early ones (1999-2001 give or take a year), but even that rating had been disputed.
In it's manufacturing life, the 790 has had 3 different engines. The last two (and current one, I believe) were both rated 27 Engine, 24 PTO HP.
Never had an HST model, all the 790's have a collar shift transmission (no-synchro, 4 speeds forward, 1 reverse with a high/low range (totalling 8 forward gears, two reverse).
Good basic tractor...had mine for 6 years now. Still in production as the 3005.

That "35 HP" is just a selling ploy.

Roy....how does the 790 do for subsoiling? Can it get 'er done with the back tires loaded?

I have a 2001 model which has the slightly more powerful engine. I have pulled a single shank KK subsoiler at max depth quite easily in my sandy soils. I didn't hardly know its was attached....but that may be quite dependent on soil types. Clay may be an entirely different story.

Anyway.....I pulled mine though an area to loosen up the brush and tree roots prior to tilling, with good results.

I think Foggy gave you the best answer, since I don't use ground-engaging implements (except for a back blade on the driveway).
I think the tires will have an effect too. You'll want ag tires (R-1's) on that 790 for serious ground engaging work.

Don't worry about loaded tires if you don't have them. A 790 will still pull a single subsoiler. I have a 27 horse 790 with R4's and only 360 lbs of wheel weights that has pulled my KK subsoiler through 40 year undisturbed hard dirt sunk all the way down with no problems. It busted through several 3"-4" tree roots and After one of the passes there was a 3' length of old rusty 2" pipe bent around the bottom of the shank when I raised it. If your doing it somewhere like I was, just make sure to go slow and be ready to step on the clutch if you catch something big.
