It depends on what the problem is.
Ford used the 1 1/8" 6 spline short pto stub thru the NAA series.. as far as i know, in 55 with the start of the hundred series, all units had the newer 1 3/8" 6 spline standard pto stub setup. Both of my very early 55 hundred series ( a ford 660 and a ford 850 ) have the 1 3/8" 6 spline pto stub.
You didn't mention what size the mower was setup for.. but I'll assume 1 3/8 6 spline. If you would post what the tractor is
You also don't mention what model the tractor is.
My only guess are:
1, Tractor is not really a hundred series, but is a NAA. This is a VERY common mistake as the sheet metal from 53 thru 64 2000/4000 looks virtually identical to the casual observer.
2, perhaps the 840 model used a similar pto assembly as the NAA.. and somebody swapped it. I don't know if this would work.. i don't have my MPC with me to see if the assembles look like they could be swapped. seal OD and lenght dimensions would have to be compaired. I tend to doubt this, as the 8xx rear end was heavier duty than the naa/6xx rear end.. etc.
3, Another idea is that the very first handfull of hundred series made it out with a pto shaft that was designed as 1 1/8 before the redesigned 1 3/8 shafts made it out. It was common for ford to use up all parts that would fit before switching to new parts. I've seen 600 with NAA fuel tanks.. ( different fuel taps make this easy to ID ).
4, lastly.. could his oem pto shaft be so rusted, worn and eroded that it no longer fits the 1 3/8 yoke?
As for adapters.. If the pto stub is actually a 1 1/8 shaft stub, then he can get a small 4$ adapter from TSC that slides over that and brings the pto stub to full 1 3/8 dimensions, including length. This slide on adapter is designed to make the short stub be the same finished length as a regualy stub.. so there should not be any issues of the pto shaft being too long.. unless it was seup to be hitched to a tractor with longer lift arms.
Is your friend perhaps using an ORC as size coupler.. thus adding 6" to the pto.. instead of about 1"
lastly.. why buy a new shaft when you should be able to cut both sides of tat telescoping shaft evenly?
Post back.
Also.. if that shaft is indeed 1 1/8 pto.. I'd love to get pics of the tractor showing a closeup o fthe pto stub, and the center of the rear axles ( hub ).. and the tranny sn boss on the left side above the starter. As i said.. I've not heard of any hundred series that had the small pto shaft.. etc... I'd love to see proof of one..
