Tractor
New Holland 1925
I am a true rookie at the world of tractors and general farm equipment, but I'm on the learning curve. I have recently purchased a NH 1925 and assorted equipment. I'd like to buy a middle buster to lay some shallow ditches (for water pipe) and to break up the soil along a sand road so I can level it out. The local Tractor Supply Co. sells a King Kutter Middle Buster for $100. This seems very cheap compared to prices of other brands in the other tractor supply places. Is the King Kutter an "OK" brand, or will it fall apart after a little use? Also, where is a good website with a forum that talks about such things as food plot planting and such? Many thanks. Rob

Rob, a middle buster is a pretty simple tool and $100 for a basic model is about the right price. The fancy ones with interchangeable heads to switch from Middlebuster to Sub Soiler to trailer hitch cost about $175. But basically a regular unit is simply an "A" frame with a stout shaft and a small plow head. King Kutter is known for average quality, I think the brand would serve you well.

Here is a link to my Sub-Soiler & Middle Buster combo. The basic unit is shown in the upper left corner of the picture and is interchangeable between a Sub-Soiler, a Middle Buster & a trailer hitch. I attached a white plastic pipe on the rear of the Sub-Soiler so I can bury electric lines for low voltage lights. It also works for small tube lawn sprinker application. I have plans to change the plastic pipe to a larger diameter muffler pipe so I can bury 1.5" I.D. flexible plastic pipe for a project I have planned later this summer. Sub-Soiler & Middle Buster Combo The remaining photos show a fork lift attachement that I designed to use the same frame as the Sub-Soiler & Middle Buster. I also replaced all the bolts that came with the unit and now use top-link pins so I can change from one implement to the other without tools.

Regarding your food plot question, search this site. The topic comes up every now and again. You may also want to search the sister site CountryByNet. There are links from TBN to CBN on many of the pages, they also talk about it over there too. There is more planting type discussion that occurs on CBN.

I don't know for sure whether they're still the same, but I bought one of those $99 TSC middle busters in '95, used it behind a B7100 and a B2710 Kubota and loaned it to a neighbor with a bigger tractor and we never broke it even when I hung roots that stopped my forward progress a few times. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Many thanks to both of you. I'm going to buy the KK middle buster at TSC this Saturday. Rob

I have a Howse middle buster. Same level of quality, same price and no problems. I would not pay more than what TSC asks because brand is far less of an issue with an implement of this simplicity.

Howse has a "three in one" deal that I would recommend. You get a middle buster, a potato plow, and a hitch (for trailers) for a little extra. Although I have never used the potato plow, it is worth it.

Also, I have run water pipe using the middle buster and a pipe bolted on to the middle buster to automatically lay the water piping. There are a couple of older, good threads here on how to do this.

One thing I learned the hard way....when stuck on roots do not lift the three point until you have backed up or you’ll bend the tip of the middle buster. If the plow is too deep to back without putting excess strain on it, then you’ll have to lift the 3point slowly while backing.

Mine broke.. the 3pt frame bent into a nice "V" shape.. ran it too deep in hard ground.. middle buster stopped.. tractor didn't. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

You were using a bigger tractor than my little Kubotas. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I've even tried to raise the 3-point when stuck on roots to see if I could pull them up. Usually they were too big and I failed, but never damaged the plow.

I’ve used it on a Massey 1250 which is approx 26 PTO HP 33 Gross, 1940lbs PTO lift and roughly 3400lbs total weight with loader. Was able to break through most roots except the Australian pines.

I drove off one morning full speed ahead with the morning coffee in hand, crisp morning air, and the adrenalin rush nothing like the sound of a high compression diesel can create....about 200’ later when I made a turn I looked back to realize I had the three point down and middle buster on......I found out I could plow at full speed, the tractor didn’t even know the plow was there /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
