I recently posted an ad for the sale of my tractor on the classifieds listing of TractorByNet. I received the following question: "Hello am strongly interested in your item on twincities.com. I am based in the Uk,I will like to know if you would accept cashier's check as payment for your item. If so let me have your full name, address and phone number to send it to you through ups.i will also want you to know that there would be an excess fund on the cashier's check. So that my shipper can use it for the shippment of the item. You do not need to worry about the shippment,my shipper will come over and pick it up.The reason for this is that my shipper will be coming over to the states for some shippment of some item to some of my clients,so that he can pick up the item and ship to the client due for the item. when you receive the
cashier's check, deduct your payment and send the excess fund on the cashier's check through western union to my shipper to come and pick it up for the shippment.I will also like to hear from you on the present condition of the item and the amount of the item again.I hope to hear from you soon."

Is it just me or does this sound "suspicious" to anyone else? Anyone ever sold a tractor to someone oversea's?

It is a scam. Don't even bother with a response. The "excess" funds that you send them would be the only money that ever changed hands - from yours to theirs.

That's a total scam. They've done it on e-bay quite often. Never, Never, Never sell something and send money back to the buyer. You do your sale just like the person was in front of you. You take the ckeck or money order for the agreed amount, deposit it in your account and make sure it clears, without any problems. Then and only then you release the item your selling. And never give out personnal information other that contact info over the internet. Just my opinion. There should be public hangings for scam artists like that. You work your whole life to buy a big ticket item and they take it away in 30 seconds, it just ain't right. Beware and protect yourself and your investments.

Thanks to both of you for your responses. As I have little experience in buying/selling of equipment on the net, I thought just maybe there was some merit to it. Appreciate the sanity check and the advice. Seems the scammers are everywhere.

Once more I'd like your opinion on a response I have with regard to the sale of my tractor here. I received the following message:

"Thank you for very much for your propmt response and interest in finalising this transaction as soon as possible. As we both know that the year is running out fast and we need to get this transaction completed before the week runs out.The price is acceptable and i will like to proceed.Funds will be transferred from my bank to you finacial institution and as soon as funds are verified the shipping procedures will be in progress.I will need to know your shipping suggestions but in the mean time i planned on using a private shipping agency and i will bear the full shipping expenses.
Before funds will be transferred by my bank, there are some needed financial informations which will be verified by my bank inorder to ensure that this is a legitimate transaction and financial informations. The needed information will facilitate free transfer of the funds to your account and you must be informed that i do not accept escrow account information.I deal directly with sellers this is to avoid being burned by fraudulent sellers.
The needed informations are as follows to which funds will be transferred to are as follows :-

Account name
Account type
Account number
Routine number
bank name and address
your contact information

With the above information, funds will be transferred as soon as possible.Get back to me with the listed informations and funds will be transferred to you without delay.I await your response"

Does this sound legit? I have alot of reservations about giving out my account info to someone I don't know. I think I'll call my bank to see what advice they would offer on this.

This sounds like an absolute scam - I'd just walk away (mabe run) from this one.

If you really want to pursue this, offer to set up an escrow account at your bank into which this "buyer" can deposit his funds and know they are not accessible until the tractor is on his truck, signed for by his driver. All he needs to know is the number of this account and the name, etc. of the bank. See how fast he turns you down.
