I agree with the others - 100% fraud. But if you would decide to pursue something like this, set up a new savings account w/ the absolute mininum usually $50 but I've seen some for as low as $5 and give him that account info to "deposit" into, but never, ever give your real info. I'm afraid to write checks to "strangers" anymore because that has all of your account info on it. I would rather do a Pay Pal type thing or Money Order.
When my wife's purse was stolen the bank couldn't figure out why I wanted the checking account closed. They said that they would just put a stop pay on the missing checks. I said no, close it because now days with electronic checks you can create a check number in any range and have a whole new series. Once I finally got beyond the moron taking the "report" verifying the claim and spoke to someone that knew what was going on, they absolutely agreed that the account must be closed.
