Would like to move up to a diesel PT and when watching the available videos on the 1430, it seems like the 2 cyl Deutz is on the loud side when compared to water cooled engines. Can anyone lend some wisdom as to how loud it actually is? Do you where hearing protection for loader work, snow plowing etc?

I wear hearing protection, but I wear earplugs when working around any engine. I do not think it is a loud engine at all, but that is just my opinion. It is an awesome sounding engine! I offered a friend to take it for a drive one really cold night, he said, I really don稚 want too, but as good as that engine sounds, I am going to. It makes a unique sound when it starts too, that I really like. They have lots of power, the 電raft control works great, which give the machine much better traction when it is needed. It starts well in cold weather, too.

I'll refrain from lecturing about hearing protection, except to say: please take it seriously.

I use a tree climbers work helmet with a motorcycle type comm system that provides earmuff type of hearing protection plus noise cancelling while allowing Bluetooth to my phone and conversation with crew. This setup can be had for about $250.

When the helmet or comm function is not required, I wear a very comfortable bose quiet connect 30 which has outstanding noise cancelation. Currently around $120

Yeah. More expensive than earplugs, which we buy by the pound... But I'm 10h /day around land care machines 8 months a year.

The sound of the oil&air cooled deutz 65hp in my 1850 is reasonable considering the power and exposure of the engine compartment. It is loud.

I have a 1430 that I use primarily for loader work and brush cutting. I wouldn't describe the engine as quiet, but it isn't obnoxiously load. We have a Kubota zero turn mower with a 30 horse power water cooled diesel that's louder. I never used a gas PT, but exhaust fumes may be a bigger difference than noise.

When the temperature gets below 20, the 1430 will still start easily, but won't want to move until the hydraulic oil warms up. Running a diesel PT in a building, even with the doors open, will fill up the building with exhaust quickly and smells much worse than gas exhaust. I park the PT just outside the barn until it warms up.
