I just bought a Massey 245 (1981 model w/ Perkins diesel) and I have some questions about it. I'm starting to get the sinking feeling that I didn't make the best investment in the world and I would sure appreciate some advice and/or assistance from the old hands who know these tractors well.

1. My oil gauge is reading high. I changed the oil and filter and it didn't make a difference. Here's the needle at 1000rpm. Should this concern me or is this just possibly a gauge calibration problem?

2. It has a Bush Hog brand loader. It didn't occur to me to pull the air filter and check it before buying it. I opened the can to get a look at the filter and discovered this:

So does this mean I have to unbolt the loader to change the air filter or am I missing something?

3. What is this thingie on the back side of the air filter canister?

4. My loader is plumbed off the remote valve, which is connected to this hydraulic valve thingie under the seat. As far as I can tell I have to choose between operating the loader and operating the three point lift. Why would this ever possibly have been a good idea? How hard (and expensive) would it be to redo the plumbing so I can operate both without having to stop, push the clutch and move the switch?

5. Is this the hydraulic filter? Is there a fuel filter and where is it? I didn't see it when I was glancing around, but I wasn't expressly looking for it either.

6. Where is the best place to buy a manual?

As always, thanks in advance for any help.

the oil pressure is ok, yes you will have to choose between three point hitch and the loader using this valve. the filter in the photo is your fuel filter, the hydraulic screen is under a triangle plate that is bolted to the bottom of the rear end housing slightly to the back of where the transmission and rear end housing bolt together. the thing on the air filter is a air restriction indicator that will pop out if the air filter is plugged. If this is a quick attach loader it should not be much trouble to dump the loader and get the air filter out. Unless your tractor is equipped with a auxuilary pump you will probably have to go with a pto pump if you want touse the loader and 3 pt. hitch at the same time.

We now have the late FIL 19 76 265 MF. I am a Ford man but am learning it is really a good tractor. Which it did not have Multi-Power but it will permit you to go down a very step hill in 1st gear doing 60 MPH. :D

With front end weights it handles a super heavy 7' bush hog in all aspects. Got a set of Pat's Easy Hitch set up and that it an awesome feature in our case.

These MF tractor are kind of crude coming from the Ford world but ours seems like a great tractor. It still had OEM tires but I have replaced the fronts now.

Just use the 245 MF and I think you will like it.
