Ag equipment here is not taxed and the dealer I bought my used M from allowed me to use my business tax number to avoid paying LST.

i'm definitely going back to local dealer, in person, to see how much better the deal can be.......I would always do this knowing they pay the same price for the Kubota tractor they are selling you as all other Kubota dealers. I'd maybe pay $300 more for a local over a near distant delivering dealer.:2cents: But probably not much over $300 because above that I'd have to question how valuable of a customer/person/individual I am to them and them knowing I'm just a local guy like them trying to make a living just like them. If they told me they have to pay more for the Kubota tractor I'd smile and walk out the door and if they got sort of hateful or act offended I'd not smile and walk out he door. Again just my :2cents:

I throw the local guy a bone when I can but I don't believe for a minute that by doing so I have established some sort of personal relationship. It's business. Likewise, if your machine needs service they'd be nuts to turn it away because you didn't buy it there - is your money not green? As far as warranty work is concerned, in the unlikely event that they gave me a hard time I'd be on the phone to Kubota. If it makes you sheepish, tell them you just moved from out of state.

it absolutely wouldn't make me sheepish. i had just never heard that, and was surprised when someone at Messicks said that was the case.

Maybe you can get away with AG tax which is less. I was surprised about that in Ca when I bought a $50K tractor tax was only about $1500. Granted I live on a ranch and my mother in law leases 60 acres of vineyards, so I was able to do that.

I would go to the other state and save $3k if it were me. No dealer will deny warranty or service.

Surprised you're the only one to say that. that's how i've been feeling. plus, my last kubota was never in the shop for the 17 years i owned it. of course, i probably just jinxed myself

Locally if you have a farm card which I’m not exactly sure what you have to do to qualify you can buy machinery and other farm related stuff tax exempt. Maybe you’re “supposed” to pay an out of state use tax or whatever but there’s no method of enforcing or collecting that. Most people don’t even know about it. They make up enough funds from wrongfully collecting tax on used vehicles to make up for out of state equipment sales.

I am really shocked that Messick's said that only the selling dealer can handle recalls. If true this is absolutely unacceptable. What if you move to another state after purchase? What if it is a safety issue? You mean Kubota and their dealer network wash their hands of the issue? I don't think so.

It amazes me how many people seem to get a better deal by dealing with out of state dealers. Seems like a dealer would want to take care of the locals at least as well, if not better, than someone out of state.

Your post reminds me of a purchase of two Jet Ski's years ago. Local dealer was significantly more than two other dealers. One was an hour away the other was 2.5 hours away. I asked the dealer if they could match. They straight out told me they were insulted that I would even consider buying outside the area. Refused to negotiate on "principle" and told me that I would not be priority if I ever needed service, warranty or otherwise.

Too bad for them. I would have paid a little more to do business locally but the question is why should I? Two other dealers could make the deal and had better service. Why should I pay more?

Couple years later I needed some regular maintenance and didn't want to drive an hour so I took it to the local shop. I was priority because they had so little business. The job got done but the customer service was as bad as I remembered. Shortly afterwards they went out of business.

So had I paid significantly more to use a local company it would have been a total waste of money. They are out of business.

I try to use local dealers as long as the deal is reasonable and service is good. If the local can't match or get close then I will buy out of town. Same goes for service, if needed I will go out of town if it is better for me. I have the ability to trailer and my time is pretty cheap so a 1-2 hour round trip is worth it if it saves me money.

I looked back through my emails and that's exactly what he said.

"If you are picking up then we can quote it, but you would be surprised how many people we quote for and then seem surprised that there is shipping involved. the other reason we recommend going to your local* dealer is if there are ever any recalls on the unit you are responsible for getting back here for the work to be done because only the selling dealer can do recall work."

That's a copy/paste of part of the email. I'm not going to post his name, but was surprised at what he had to say.
