I'm trying to educate myself on prior to using my tractor this spring. The JD 1520 I bought doesn't have the front side screens on it. A lot of the ones I see on the net do. What are these screens for and do I need them? I am attaching two pictures. One is my tractor. The other is one I got off the net that has the screens in place.

I would have them, much easier to brush off the screens than try to clean the radiator. The screens should still be available from either Deere or Yesterdays Tractors.

FWIW, your tractor looks to be in decent shape, sure would look good with a few fix ups and a paint job.

As stated above. The fan pulls air thru the radiator, the screens keep debrie from reaching the radiator. You really need them if you mow in the fall when everything has gone to seed. The ones on my 2030 look like they have fur on them when I mow in the fall.

Ebay is another place to look for a pair, be sure they are for your 1520, I Think three cylinder tractors use narrower sceens than four cylinder tractors, but not sure.

As stated, very important to keep the dust, weed seeds, and debris out of the radiator.

That said, I would be very diligent in being sure that your radiator is clean now, before learning that it is chuck full and you get an overheating situation.

The 1520 looks like it will be a good tractor for you, and hope it is so. :)

Thanks for the good advice. I've started looking on the net and it seems they are readily available, so I am going to order two. Also good call on flushing the radiator. I'll work on that too. I'm really looking forward to using this old tractor. I'd like to do some fixup stuff to it, but using it is the priority.

I think what was meant was to blow out the fins on the radiator to ensure you have proper airflow through them.

I would fix it up when the spare time was available, in good shape later it would make a good trade or downpayment when and if you decided to upgrade.

Right on, jenkinsph. That is what I meant to say, as there may be a lot of debris plugging up the fins and restricting air flow. Thanks for catching that.

Each screen is held in place by a single spring. Don't forget them, may have to order from a dealer.
