Looks like a very well thought out piece and well made, good job !

As far as the earlier part of the thread , well everything you needed to make that in plain mild steel was 40x as strong as was required for the job at hand, there wasn't a lot of input needed there for someone to weld that up nicely and strong enough for life. I'm sure you understand more about that since you're getting some training now. There are some choices in MIG wire and you might make that decision based on machinability of the finished part, like to weld up a damaged shaft and then machine it back to original shape, but for the most part we just use a good alloy wire like ER70s-6 and it works very well. Ultimately the skill of the welder is usually much more noticeable than the materials used.
