I purchased a used sprayer 3 years ago, used it once, the left it outdoors under a tarp. I had intended to move it into the new barn, but that didn't happen until about a week ago. I know I'm going to pay for my bad behavior, but I need to spray a field next weekend. I'm checking all the hoses for cracks and will replace any that seem weak.

My main concern is the pto pump. I tried turning it with my fingers and it didn't budge. What should I do to the pump before I hook it to the pto?

I'm considering disconnecting the hoses and pouring oil or some other lubricant in and trying to break it loose by hand. Is that a place to start?

Thanks,

It may be too late for the lubrication. You need to get it free before you hook it up to the PTO or, I'm told, bad things can happen. So I think it comes down to brute force. I've never had to rebuild mine but Tractor Supply sells a rebuild kit for them and again, I'm told that they are easy to repair.

Just had to do that a week ago. Had a cast pump with Glyphosate through it...

First, pull the snap ring off the name plate on the back of the pump, then remove name plate. Take out the four screws, and tap out the shaft. I open my little bench-mounted vise just enough to rest the in and out ports on it, then gently tap the shaft, pull the case apart. Sand/wire-brush any rust out of the case, clean the rollers the same way, and the carrier-thing for the rollers, lubricate well, and reverse the process. The pump should spin with a pair of pliers, or turned by hand when locking the shaft in a vise.

I think Hy-Pro and Delevan have the directions to rebuild on their web-sites. A rebuild kit, if the rollers and seals are too far gone will run around $40 for a 6-roller pump.

Always, flush the pump with clear water in the tank for a few minutes, take the pump off the sprayer, and store in an oil or antifreeze bath for extended periods of non-use. I fill mine with oil and cap the outlets with plastic screw-in caps.

Thanks! Just the kind of instructions I was looking for. Also, thanks for the storage tips. I promise to take better care of my equipment.

I just went through the same situation. My Hypro 6500 pump had seized due to poor storage conditions. I took it apart and cleaned it very well. It still would not turn when the 4 housing bolts were tight. I discovered that the flat surfaces of the housing and rotor had to be very smooth to allow the pump to turn freely. Also, Tractor Supply wanted $52.00 for the rebuild kit with rollers and I found the kit online for $32.00. I then saw the kit at the local JD dealer for $34.00. Hope this was helpful.
