I received my new root grapple and I noticed there is about a 1/4 inch of play (slop) when I attached it to the quick attach is that too much?

I could weld some strap material to the base of the grapple to take up some of the slop. I would put it between the pad of the loader and the grapple.

Maybe I am worried for nothing but I have not seen the slop with the bucket on. How much play is OK?

You have a skidsteer quick attach?
You don't want any slack, it will wear faster if its loose.
You either need to bend the attachment bottom QA plate up so the loader qa does not go as far forward into the attachment or weld the hole shut a bit where the locking pins enguage the holes. The springs between the locking handles and the lock pins should compress some when the handle is locked down. Then as the attachment wears the pins will take up any slack

Yes it is skidsteer type quick attach. I think we are on the same page, it is if the quick attach frame on the grapple rake is too tall and the loader quick attach plate can move up and down inside the other frame.

Would it be alright to weld a piece of strap steel under the uper part of the the female end (grapple) of the quick attach plate to prevent the male end (loader end) from going up as high thus leaving the pin to catch more.

WOW, if you can understand what I am trying to explain:( -- Think of your house with the roof over hang, I would be putting the strap steel up against the overhang to maintain the same angle but not allowing the loader arm to go up as high there fore the pin would seat lower on the bottom hole.

I really apreciate your help in this

I don't think it would matter which side you shim it up from. top or bottom. Top is likely better.
Also another tractor qa might fit it just perfect, so if you ever think it may go on another tractor, do it in a fashion that could be adjusted in the future.
Your certainly on the right track.

Before you weld something that may not be correct, try using a scrap of thin wood/wall panel ripped on table saw or something like that or paint sticks or just tape the metal filler there

I did it to mine on the bottom side. Seemed easier to weld at the strategic points needed.

Pick the attachment up with the loader, shake it a few times, and shim from the bottom, while still attached to the loader, that way you can always have enough clearance to disconnect and reconnect. Spot weld the shim first, and if you screw up it's easier to correct.:D

Maybe fill in your profile so we know what tractor?loader you have. I had a thread some time back about this issue with a grub bucket.

It is a kubota 4740 with the kubota loader

I welded the top piece in and it was not enough I can easily remove if need be, now I am going to try the lower section where the pin goes in.

I did use it alot the last two weekends cleaning up after a ice storm. The grapple makes a chore much easier! Some of the limbs were as big around as my leg and some of the trees had bases as big as trash cans. I could build brush piles much tighter using the tractor vs by hand should burn well soon.

Welded a piece in the top ???? Do you mean in the attachment ? Did you see my pics of the Markham ??? The Kubota QA has a rebated top and that allows the QA to engage the attachmet to far. If you compare your grapple to the factory bucket you can see what I mean. The Kubota QA is made to work on a flat plate rather than an open design like many are building. It took a 1/2" thick by 4" wide plate to fill in my grubber so it fit properly.
