Last summer we purchased a JD 4300 and I was interested in purchasing or building a ballast box. At that time I also ran across information on the Quick Hitch from JD. The Quick Hitch seemed in theory like a good idea, but the price for the JD Quick Hitch and JD quick hitch ballast box was $630 (shipping, taxes, etc.). I also wanted the quick hitch to work on our roto-harrow (rotoharrow.com, which by the way works great). I wasn’t sure I could modify the harrow to work with the JD quick hitch so I ordered the ASAE standard ( $30 for S278.6 from asae.org). I made some measurements on the harrow and determined that it would not work on the JD quick hitch without a major rebuild, but would work on an adjustable quick hitch sold by Land Pride ($360) or Northern Tool ($245) with a slight addition. I purchased the one from Northern and an extra set of lift pin adapters. The pictures show the ballast box (approx. 7 cubic ft.), quick hitch and modified harrow. The ballast box was also designed to work with a standard 3ph by removing the lower adapter pins (removing the nuts) and installing standard lift pins. Everything works great! All I have to do now is paint and fill the box with rocks from our property.
