Last summer we purchased a JD 4300 and I was interested in purchasing or building a ballast box. At that time I also ran across information on the Quick Hitch from JD. The Quick Hitch seemed in theory like a good idea, but the price for the JD Quick Hitch and JD quick hitch ballast box was $630 (shipping, taxes, etc.). I also wanted the quick hitch to work on our roto-harrow (rotoharrow.com, which by the way works great). I wasn’t sure I could modify the harrow to work with the JD quick hitch so I ordered the ASAE standard ( $30 for S278.6 from asae.org). I made some measurements on the harrow and determined that it would not work on the JD quick hitch without a major rebuild, but would work on an adjustable quick hitch sold by Land Pride ($360) or Northern Tool ($245) with a slight addition. I purchased the one from Northern and an extra set of lift pin adapters. The pictures show the ballast box (approx. 7 cubic ft.), quick hitch and modified harrow. The ballast box was also designed to work with a standard 3ph by removing the lower adapter pins (removing the nuts) and installing standard lift pins. Everything works great! All I have to do now is paint and fill the box with rocks from our property.

Great job on the ballast box and retrofit of rotoharrow.
First time I've seen or heard of a rotoharrow. Guess it spins by the action caused by the harrow teeth being at an angle?

Is your quick hitch designed to different specs than the Deere I-match? Or are they the same? They look quite alike (comparing yours with mine, but I can't tell what the dimensions are - of course).

Welcome to TBN, Jonathank! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

When posting multiple pictures, it's best to reply to your original message instead of starting a new thread for each picture.

I have attached your other 2 pictures, the second one being a QuickHitch from Northern, to this message and have removed the other two threads. This will keep all the discussion in this single thread.

Again, welcome to TBN! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Both the JD, Landpride and Northern are all designed to the same ASAE Standard, but the JD doesn't have an adjustable upper hook. The standard calls out a fixed distance. This makes it more difficult in matching up non quick hitch implements.

I just finished getting my carry-all converted over to adapt to the I-match. The welder I go to did a very good job. Now I can drop a load of firewood near my wood stove, and get the ballast box back on easily. Sure are nice features. As well, I pull in a few logs using the top I-match hook for making firewood.
Do you have the ASAE Standard that you could share or point us to?
Thanks for the information and pics. I suppose the painting task is next.
