Well, I caught a raccoon that has been terrorizing my garage and animals for months now. I caught him in a big live-catch trap. He weighs about 30 lbs. What should I do with him now? I could shoot him or I could take him for a ride. If I take him for a ride, how far away is far enough? I don't want him to come back.

I have been in the same deal before but it was with skunks and I just didn't have the heart to pull the trigger on them in the live trap, I took the whole family of skunks down the road was out of the way no homes around and said adios and that was maybe 10 miles from home. Funny this comes up today, when I walked out the back door on my way to work this morning guess what I smelled....woulnder if its that same family back???????? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Jerry, Its nice to capture these critters alive but don't do what some of the city dwellers do which is to drive to the country and release them so they can live in my back yard. THere was a recent article in the Minneapolis Tribune about how to get rid of racoons. Of course, the writer thought it was a great idea to purchase a live trap and move the raccoon about 5 miles away. Of course in the Minneapolis-ST. Paul area you simply move the pesky critter from your back yard to another back yard. I don't enjoy dealing with pests either but don't just transfer the problem to someone else.

OK, before Tcowner comes looking for me cause I said take him down the road, let me say I'm not a city dweller and I was still the closest house to where I let the family go /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Shoot him! If not I'd take him a 100 miles away.

Put the cage in a plastic garbage bag, and hook a hose to the tail pipe of the car...... You get the idea on where this is going! Just put him to sleep for a very long time! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Around here most raccoons caught in the day are rabid! so be careful /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif You don't want to have to get the shots /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I did and it was no fun /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

If it ends up in a trap,

it's time for a .22 caliber "pill" then a dirt nap.

Unfortunatly, I have to agree this is probably the best solution. On the bright side, there could be some tractor time in preparing that dirt bed /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

WVBill:

short story- maganed that all three babies got into the trap at the same time and mommy skunk was half beside herself with her babies traped. when I came out to the barn mommy ran into a old roll of roofing felt and I quickly capped both ends with old feed bags ok she's cought, ok, like you asked how do I pick up the littles ones in the trap with out getting sprayed the wife chimed up and said thros a plastic tarp over the cage and grab cage handle throu trarp and let tarp drap around cage when I lifted it...bingo!!!!

You know I wasn't thinking of the rabies thingy maybe better to put a cap in this one.
