Hi All,

I need some help planning out a rain water catch system for livestock.
I plan on catching the water off the barn about 100 away from an old cistern. Once the water is in the cistern I知 trying to figure what to do next to get the water back out. I guess in a perfect world I would set up a pump to pump back through a smaller 1 or 2 line to one or more anti freeze spigots. I壇 like to be able to utilize this system during the winter here in Southern Indiana.

The part I need help with the most is the pumping area. I will need to power the pump with a generator. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried Googling Rainwater Harvesting? I seen to remember reading about using solar panel/battery to power live stock watering systems.

I have and am looking for more info...... Some folks go with submersibles etc and am trying to figure out what works best for the money.

Thanks Chris!

you may find a small solar pump to be more efficent over the long run.

I have a cistern on my property that has an old clay tile inlet for gutter drains. run 4" plastic corigated pipe to it underground a few inches.

then you need a sump pump (or shallow well pump) to pump the water from the cystern to the water'r location.

my final setup when the new house is built will be a shallow well pump in the shallow well with a low water cutoff. That pumps to the cistern. The cistern sump type pump has a high water cutt off, and low water cut on (both feed to the shallow well pump) that feeds a presure tank. water is pumped throughout the property for various things like yard hydrants, garden watering and the gray water system for the house.

course it has an overflow that gravity flows into the ditch behind the house.

Most of the livestock water holes around here where there isn't electricity are concrete cone shaped tanks with a solar powered sub pump. Some are still wind pumps but only on the older farms. By the time I'm done with my pond I will have rain gutters on the edge of our roof to help keep water in it. It's a high bank pond just 30 feet from the house and I know it's going to take some well time keeping it full around here no matter how or what I line it with.

Since I have no idea what I'm doing....... if I went with a solar pump do I still need a pressure tank to feed the yard hydrants and what about winterizing the pump or lines?

The cistern has a built in overflow and then the opening on the top.

I used to live in Florida so winterizing things are a little new to me.

I used these guys for my solar system you can run the grundfus pumps on about any thing from 30v dc to 240v ac they and can be laid horizontally if needed but are expensive. The small sureflow dc pumps ain't cheep either.
