I have a 6' bush hog rotary cutter and need to cut some weeds, mainly johnson grass. The issue is that I'd like to cut it to about 24" high (this may seem ridiculous, but it has to do with training dogs). So is it unsafe to mow with the deck raised that much? If not, is it unsafe to cut with the deck raised to 12"?
Of course, this would be with NOBODY else around.
Thanks,

Just thinking outside the box here.

Couldn’t you attach longer chains skirting the cutter so at a minimum the object would slow down substantially?

Also if you have a cab and have mowed the area short previously I wouldn’t worry near as much.

I would mostly be concerned about safety. With the PTO off, raise the deck, get off, and check the angle of the PTO shaft. If it is just a little, will not hurt, but not 20 acres.

The biggest problem would be the driveshaft angle being too out of line.
I used to cut palmetto's by raising deck all the way up and back into them and lower deck slowly.
Chewed them all the way to the ground!
Gotta love a Stump Jumper!

Thanks for the replies! The angle looks okay. I値l try it tomorrow if it痴 dry enough, but the forecast isn稚 looking promising.

If you have mowed this area before and you are cutting "GRASS" and not limbs or trees there should not be anything to "TROW". Grass will itself is not that heavy to travel far. If you were cutting trees would feel different.

I think you will be OK. I have cut with the mower raised. 24 inches high is not extreme.

yeah I sure wouldn't want to cut anything with it that high that would produce any projectiles coming at me :)
