Took me a while to find this/it's an archived dvd that Yamaha created to compare different utv's. (they mailed these to customers)
I had this dvd overnighted and extracted the Ranger/Rhino comparison and hosted it on google video. (too large for youtube 550mb)
Both of these vehicles are awesome imho. I own a Rhino and would love to own a Ranger as well.
Please take what you see with a grain of salt. :D

Enjoy Ranger XP vs. Rhino 660

That was an interesting video. Yamaha pointed out the Ranger isn't a pure sport machine which is more or less what Polaris tells everyone. If you want a pure sport machine the Rhino is a good fit. If you want a pure work machine the RTV, XUV and a few of the others are a good fit. If you want a "utility" machine that will fit in with both the Ranger is the only UTV on the market that I know of that will fit into both categories. To do that you are going to be deficient in some areas but as a do all the Ranger seems like the best machine out there.

That was a nice video and I always like watching the OEM's sales material. You see what they really care about. What I noticed a lot was that Yamaha didn't mention any cargo numbers. They didn't list what the load capacity was on either machine, towing capacity or other numbers that a lot of UTV buyers look for. I would have loved a Rhino as it looks like a great sport machine if that is all I wanted. And from watching this video that is all the customers they want. They are targeting the people who use these machines as oversized ATV's.

As I said, it was a nice video and fun to watch. I learned a lot about what Yamaha really cared about and what they worried about.

Didn't the Polaris video showing the "poor" steering on the Rhino compare them with equal loads? If the Rhino has a max capacity of 800 pounds that was all the Ranger put in their box also. Yamaha hid that point ever so nicely;) Max both machines out and the video makes them appear to have equal steering control

I know from experience, if you put much of a load in my Rhino the performance suffers tremendously. (3 to 400 hundred lbs)

The Rhino is loads of fun and very nimble..

Skip: I'll ask you this because you own a Rhino, "How easy is it to operate the foot pedals with big work boots and rubber overboots on(Winter time/Snow)? How well does a 235 lb guy with insulated coveralls and hooded sweatshirt fit into those bucket seats? I've never even ridden one, but it seems the farmers that I have seen tend to go with Ranger or John Deere and I have always wondered if the entry/exit was easier than the Rhino with bench seats? Just curious about your opinion. Thanks

I think some farmers like the bench seat to be able to haul 3 people instead of only two.

That reminds me of one of Yamaha's other "advantages". Their bucket seats are better then the bench seat because you don't slide around as much. They even make a point of showing the Ranger with three guys in it and talk about how bad it is to have "three" people sliding around on it. Of course they showed the clip of them flying down a rough trail to showcase their point.

I am surprised they took on this aspect. The ability to seat three people is a major issue to a lot of UTV buyers. But in the sport UTV market the two seaters are the popular style. But as a utility machine, the option to seat three makes some machines very popular. This is why the Mule and the Bobcat have two rows of seats now on certain models.

Skip or anyone who wants to answer, does Yamaha really look at the Ranger as a major competitor? They are two different classes of machines in my view. I would think Yamaha would be more concerned with new Polaris sport UTV as well as Honda's and the other companies. If the Ranger is that strong of a competitor then Polaris did a great job.

Also, does anyone have any idea for sales figures on the different UTV's similar to the truck sales numbers? How does the Ranger rate in terms of sales compared to the other UTV OEM's?

I weigh close to 240. :) I normally ride in waders. No problems with the pedals at all. The problem with the Rhino usually arises with shorter ppl because the seat is not adjustable.
I also have an XUV Gator. If I had to chose one for work and play it would be the gator. The Gators and Rangers can carry much more payload and are easier on your lawn.
The Rhino has a fully locked rear differential and the payload capacity is around 400lbs. Rhino is nimble, lots of fun and will fit on most atv trails.

The Ranger XP's speed and horsepower make it a competitor of both the sport and work class utv. Altho it's not a sport utv because of it's size and bench seat.
The Rhino's main competition is the Polaris Ranger Rzr and the new Kawasaki Teryx.

Thanks to both Robert and Skip. I know my Dad's new neighbor says he won't buy any more 4-wheelers for herding cattle and fence repairs, it will be Rangers with bench seats from now on. He can bring his two young sons along, with the bench seat.

I can say, I learned alot from that video. And it did point out things that lots of folks don't even think about during their quest for a UTV .. Enjoyed it very much !!!! Thanks ~~~

That is one of the great things about sales material like this and the one Polaris put out. You learn what they think is great about their own machines, what they worry about on other machines and you learn about their research about potential buyers and what those buyers are looking for.

I don't take these things very seriously but they are fun to watch and you "can" learn from them if you don't take their test results "too" seriously.
