Picture of a black bear "in the middle of no where" in Utah. I remember this guy because he took me a half day to find after he lost me in the morning when he came across me and took off (we were up high). Wasn't hunting, but just getting "lost" hiking. One of the few times I had a camera when I really wanted on.

When I came across a park ranger the next day, he told me it was the first reported "sighting" of a black bear in the area (back about 6 or 7 years ago).

First and only time I saw a black bear in that type of habitat.

Neat picture. They are rare around here too. Last one spotted was 10 years ago by a photographer friend of mine.

2 black bear where reported in Lane Oklahoma this summer ... of course There was also a Bigfoot sighting near the Boggy Depot River!!!

Of course, I saw some black bears in Canada and Alaska on trips up there, but the only time I've actually seen one in the lower 48 was 8/19/92 when we were spending a couple of nights at the Silver Bay (MN) KOA and I walked down to the water (Lake Superior for those who don't know where Silver Bay is) and on the way back to the motorhome, a bear walked out into the trail maybe 75 to 100 yards from us, stopped to look at us (and of course we stopped, too), then a cub walked out into sight to join the older bear and they both walked on off into the woods.

Now my wife had stayed at the motorhome to do the dishes, since we had just finished dinner, and I had walked down to the lake with an older couple from California. When I told my wife about seeing the bear, she asked, "Well, weren't you afraid?" And I told her, "Nope, that other couple are both older than me and I'm sure I can outrun both of them." She thought that was terrible, but I told her when I got to the motorhome and got a gun, I'd have gone back.

Bird, that was terrible survival of the fittest though, right
