I am sad to announce the resurrection and further escapades of the Rufus Rat Heirs. Went to the farm today and raised the hood on the 990 (YES, I had closed the hood after I thought that the first rat family had been eradicated - I won't close the hood again when gone from the farm.), and there was a rat's nest the size of a volley ball and the rat looking at me with his beady eyes. He ran to the woods as I was trying to stomp him with my foot. I cleaned out the nest and blew the motor off and contemplated my next move. I left the hood open and salted the motor with a Decon box and spread a bunch of TOM CAT on the ground. I'm sick of these varmints and will fight them to the death (theirs or mine). Hopefully leaving the hood open will end this battle. I hope there will not be a Post #5 on this matter.

You know, there's one other strategy.

On some sheep farms, they will acquire just a few of a special breed of sheep that faints at the least sign of stress. These would be sacrificial sheep. When the rest of the flock takes off upon seeing a wolf, these sheep simply fall over (I'm getting to the rats, just stay with me.) With an easy meal laying there, the wolves stop to eat. Instead of killing eight or ten sheep, they just feast on the sacrificial one or two.

Anyway, getting back to rats, you could provide a place for them that would be better than the engine compartment of your tractor in which to make their nest. Perhaps an old cardboard box taped shut except for a small opening. You could even put some tiny bit of food in there to entice them. Perhaps even put it near the tractor. Then, every time you go to the farm, you do what you want with the rats living there-in. If the box is in a dark corner of the barn, the rats are even likely to run there for protection when you open the door.

You could even provide a little nesting material for them, perhaps some old insulation or rags. Make it nice and friendly. Then clean up is just closing the box and putting it in a friends snake terrarium.

Then put out a new box. Repeat as needed.

Moth Balls sure kept my mice away from my boat. I am wondering if you would put some moth balls on a tray of some kind on your motor. I bet that would keep them away or I would think. Something to try.
