Re: Rat\'s Nest On My Motor

To followup on the rat's nest I went back to the farm 6 days later and nervously raised the hood of my 990 and there was a bigger nest than was before. To make it worse the biggest rat I have ever seen was staring at me from his hole. I hit him with a stick but only made him run off. His nest
was full of acorns, berries, and other assorted pantry stuff.
But this time I was ready for him. I cleaned out the mess and then laced the motor with poison (the bar type). I then
salted the ground under the tractor with a pelletized poison.
Then, as per one TBN friend I left the hood raised on the tractor. Will be going back to the farm Tuesday. What will I find? Stay tuned for more escapades of Rufus Rat!

Re: Rat\'s Nest On My Motor

Your story reminds me of the time a few weeks ago I went to use the tractor and opened the hood to check the oil. Found a 4 foot rat snake curled up on top of the motor. Kind of caught me by surprise.

Funny thing was I was back again the next weekend and found his skin (shed perfectly) underneath my seat.

Needless to say I look things over pretty good now before I hop on.

Best of luck with your rat problem, I bet the poison will put an end to his unwanted visits.

Re: Rat\'s Nest On My Motor

My M-I-L keeps her "travelling" van out in the pole barn. Here is what we found earlier this year (see attachment). This is probably the 4th or 5th time that they have got into it. They've chewed up the wiring twice and that cost about $1800 to fix. We can't use poison because my S-I-L runs a boarding kennel at the farm and there are the farm dogs running around too. I may try leaving the hood up and see what that does.

A follow-up to the skunk that had taken up residence on my place:

DANGER WILL ROBINSON! DannyD, avert your eyes! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

After continually seeing the little bugger almost every night/early morning since the last post, and seeing it dig holes by the chicken run, I made a trip to town last Saturday and bought a single-shot 410 gauge shotgun from the pawn shop for $50. Got some XPress shells w/ 7-1/2 shot.

That very night not long after full dark, the boys and I walked the driveway to the road and there was the skunk, headed into the culvert under my driveway over the borrow ditch. I was waiting at the top of the ditch when he poked his head out - one shot and it dropped stone dead, without spraying. Haven't seen any other skunks since, so we assume it was alone. Problem solved for relatively cheap and easy.
