raw fuel leaking from exhaust manifold.

Purchased 1976 JD 2040 2 days ago. has the 2.7 L diesel. ive noticed raw fuel leaking wear the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe meet.
ive been a gear head my whole life. NEVE work on or owned anything diesel. I guess its time to learn.
any advice would b greatly appreciated.

Does the engine run rough? Down on power? Sounds like a leaky injector to me.

i think it is running smooth with good power.
the other thing is that the exhaust smells really bad.
my neighbor has a diesel tractor and his dont smell as bad.
im not blowing any smoke.

May need to be worked hard to get rid of build up in the exhaust. Run it on a bush hog for a few hrs and see if it helps.

It may have been babied it's entire life and have a bad case of slobber....

smell the oil.. if it doens't smell like fuel or look thin. go run the bajeebers out of it for 2-3 hours. like run it at rated pto hp doing GOOD work. not just running around the neighborhood at idle to get your mail... like go mow down some waist high thorn bushes, then turning plow up the field, then disc it.. then check to see if it has celared up.

we have a 2240 at work and it will slobber if you don't make it work...

Is that 2.7L a direct injection or a ported injection engine? Is it normally aspirated or turbocharged?

My experience with direct injection turbo engines is that as they age if they are not WORKED or idle for long periods they will slobber. Doesn't hurt anything, and usually doesn't use a lot of oil. Just need to run hard for a while to clean up the exhaust system. Doesn't sound like a big problem to me.
