Well, on one of my routine checks, i noticed my gearbox had lost all fluid. I refilled, used it for about 2 hours, and noticed oil on top of the deck.

I disassembled it today, and best I can tell the horizontal shaft, it's gear, and the housing are the only parts left that are good.

It will likely be cheaper to replace the entire gearbox than replace every bad part in it.

Anyone have any tips on part sourcing, or where to get a gearbox?

thanks

I would first check with your local Kubota dealer as s/he may have a number of used decks lying around and you might find a good gear box on one of them. Or s/he may know where to get a new or used gear box at a reasonable cost, or a new gear box may not be all that expensive. I have scrounged a number of parts off old decks at the dealer nearest me. Good luck! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I just changed the gearbox oil on mine (ZD-21 with ProDeck) this past week @ the 200 hour mark. Everything was fine. Added synthetic gear oil and man is it QUIET. This is the best quality mower I've even had, simply amazing.

SkyPup? Fancy meeting you here. How's that ZD run on biodiesel?

Anyway, i think i have about 150 hours on it, i just happen to hear that it was louder than normal, checked it and sure enough, it was out of oil. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Bummer.

If I remember correctly, there is a seal on the bottom of the gearbox that you need to keep an eye on. The one bolt above the gearbox drain is the fluid level bolt, it is a good idea to check the level every 10-20 hours when you grease the bearings. Open that bolt up and if no 90wt gear oil leaks out, add enough so that it does.

I was able to change the oil withoug removing the deck using 60ml horse syringes.

The ZD-21 PRODeck is one of the most heavy duty QUIET mower setups I have ever seen!

I don't know how it runs on biodiesel because the quality of biodiesel is so poor I would not risk using it in my equipment.

YIKES /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I will be checking the fluid level more often myself!

Even if you replace just the bad parts how do you know the others aren't compromised. I know $724 is a bunch but piece of mind might be worth it.

I always wondered why my maint. schedule says to replace the bottom gearbox seal every other year.

I'll be checking my oil level more often. . . .

Kubota will NEVER get that kind of money from me. **** I paid near 10 grand for the mower itself. The 60" deck new wasnt but like$1800.

I plan to have the bearings and seals matched up at a local industrial supplier. The gears and splined shafts are a different story. The same set of gears I paid $52.00 for 2 years ago now sell for $150.00! What kind of ***** is that? I would expect that from john deere, but geez. ***?

So does anyone really change the seal every 2 years? What is different about the these GB's from any other. I ran JD's for years and never even thought about the seals unless one started leaking after 20 years.

Where can I get the gear box for 724.00

At any Kubota dealer. You'll need a time machine that can go back to 2006 though. Sorry but this is an old thread. Welcome to TBN. What do you need it for? I think if you look around you can find an aftermarket gearbox depending on the application. I know when I was rebuilding one on my Herd spreader someone selling them popped up in the ads to the right.

a really old thread but still interesting.

Short answer to your question for me on this end is yes I would follow the manufactures rec. service intervals... Normally I follow manufacturers maintainance schedules and consider them a minimum just to prevent big ticket failures such as this.

Usually my maintainance if even more frequent than than manufacturers spec. just in a hope not to have catastrophic failures such as this.

I remember a number of years back on some OHV cars GM spec'ed changing the rubber cam timing belt at 100,000 miles. But lots of people didn't and the local garage made a ton of work fixing engines after the rubber timing belt broke at speed.

anyone have the part number for the gear box or anyway to get new gears? The inevitable happened today... I check the box every time I start mowing and I had a seal failure and when I first heard any kind noise it was to late.... Now I need the whole works... Hopefully I can find a used gearbox but if not I will have to rebuild this. I will say being a diesel/hydraulic technician I am a bit embarassed.

Hi, the gearbox on my Rck60B mower deck is leaking oil out the bottom of the gearbox onto the top of the mower deck. I have bought new seals but don't know how to remove the gearbox in order to replace the seals. Can anyone point me in the right direction or supply directions to complete the job? Thanks

That was meant to be, can anyone supply me with instructions to remove gearbox and replace the seals. Thanks
