Re: PTO Pushrod Pops Out Every Now and Again
Thank you for your message, prs.
The belt showed signs of wear particularly at one point. A little bit of material was missing. What caused that, I do not know.
I never engage the clutch with the engine going faster than 2,100 rpm, and typically I engage it at 2,000 rpm. More recently, when the pop-out problem was recurring more frequently, I tried engaging the clutch at 1,800 or 1,900 rpm.
I typically disengage the clutch with the engine running at 2,000 rpm. I did not know about disengaging at near-idle speed and the safety brake issue. I do not recall reading that suggested practice in the owner's manual (the version that I currently have; I understand there is now a newer one).
I adjusted my electromagnetic clutch this past Spring. I also had to remove the hood and grill as a unit to get to two of the clutch windows. My clutch was at spec in one window and too tight in two. I have done this same clutch on other equipment and realized that the solution was to bring the loose one into spec first, and then slightly loosen the others to get spot on.
Your wear this early on (if it is wear and not just how it was from the supplier) leads me to suggest that you consider your engagement practice. It is best to always engage at the lowest RPM that does not stall the machine, typically 2,000 and to disengage at near slow idle speed (to save the safety brake). Engaging at speed and under load will wear it quickly, my previous neighbor discovered that the hard way on his Deere compact.
