I was just wondering if any of you have, or have considered, re-routing your exhaust from vertical discharge to down under the rear axle like a lot of tractors such as the Farmall Cub, International utilities, and Ford 8N's (see attached photo of a re-routed Farmall Cub). I just bought an Iseki TS1610F and thought it would be really nice to get under trees with that setup. Any problem with it being a diesel? It would be really easy to fab a connecting flange at the exhaust manifold with a welding elbow, and have the local muffler shop bend up a new exhaust pipe with oval automotive muffler for clearance. Just looking for opinions.

I don't think the photo came through but I think you probably know what I'm talking about.

You are right on the photo, my NH1630 has the exhaust coming out the side and down.

This probably isn't an issue, but maybe something to think about.
Exhaust systems create backpressure on the engiine. New vehicles, with electronic fuel management systems, depend on back pressure at specified parameters to function properly.
It's not like the old days, when you just put a free flow muffler, to get a few more Horsepower.
Now, rerouting your exhaust (in this case, lengthening the system if I interpret your intent correctly) would increase backpressure and may result in a loss of power.
I'm not sure how signifigant the loss would be, or if other operating problems would arise.

The straight system (yours is probably similar to my 670's exhaust...off the engine manifold, then straight up) is probably (opinion only!!) designed based upon cost and minimal power loss.

I know one can buy Deere's with an optional routing of the exhaust (horizontal instead of vertical) which is probably to clear low hanging obstructions better (such as tree limbs in an orchard). Rather this optional system is of a different length, or if the injection pump is calibrated differently is something I do not know.

Another thing to consider: Will routing under the machine cause any problems when traveling through brush or rough ground?

Just something to consider before you convert your tractor

I tried to do that on a Ford 5600. It wasn't long after I bought it (used) that I hit a tree branch and knocked the muffler off at an angle. On inspection, I found that someone in the past had damaged a stud on the exhaust manifold. Checking with a NH dealer showed that there was an under the tractor exhaust setup which I bought including the downflow exhaust manifold.

The only problem is that the system ran straight into the takeoff for the driveshaft to the front axle. Turns out Ford didn't design it or any low mount exhaust for a MFWD. I ended up getting a shop to make up a U-shaped exhaust which connects to the downflow manifold and goes straight up. That and a pair of ear plugs (no muffler) get the job done.

At some point I'll take some coat hanger wire and shape it to route under the rear axle. I'll take that to a shop and have a piece of pipe bent to match. That will dump the exhaust out the rear. The other thing to consider routing the exhaust low is do you need a spark arrester? If so you may find a motor cycle unit that will fit.

Another idea is to do what the previous owner of my Case did. The Case has a heavy pipe ( 5") roll bar. He routed the exhaust through a riser and out the top. The heavy wall pipe isn't going to budge if it hits a branch. The only problem again is no muffler. The neighbor thought someone had a dozer on top of the ridge the first time I had it out.

Thanks for the replies guys. The only tight place I can see to routing it back and under the floor board/rear axle is right at the steering arm where it connects to the steering box. I think there would be enough room, however, even if the exhaust pipe had to be narrowed (ovaled) at that point. As for back pressure, I looked at my handy dandy gas pipe flow chart and it appears one size larger pipe, say from 1-1/2" to 2" or 2" to 2-1/2", would allow three times the pipe length at a given flow (in CFM for gas with a SG of .65) for the same back pressure (around 5"WG). If it turns out that it is critical for proper scavenging, it could easily be fine tuned with a manometer connected at the exhaust elbow (my tractor has four small threaded openings there for something) and a butterfly valve or other adjustable restrictor at the muffler end. But since there are no electronic fuel management systems on these Isekis, it might not matter that much. And in consideration of flame/spark arrestors, I will only use the tractor with a tiller for my garden and maybe a mower for my lawn.....no brush hogging, etc. Sorry for being so verbose.

Bill,if you look at some of the picts of newer 4x4 tractors you will see that the exhaust is rear deflected instead of through the hood.Kioti and mahandra are two off hand.I kept knocking the exhaust off my 3000...simple fast fix...Harley shorty muffler (chrome)...end of problem...also knoticed my 3000 has the brackets for an under body exhaust also...Sid

I like the undercarriage routing on my 8n ford exhaust.. but have worried on occasion about rocks or large brush.. but no problems yet.

The stack on my NH 1920 lets branches whap! me frequently... but somethimes I have to use it as i need more hp than the 8n can provide.

SIR,
when i opened your attachment, there was nothing. as far as the
under muffler. KUBOTA has optional mounting on some of the tractors.
i had this put on mine,(L3000DT) because i also have some trees, and
i was afraid that i would knock the muffler off if it was mounted topside.
i think it would be a simple matter for someone who is mechanical, to
reroute the muffler under the tractor.
