Deere Completes Chinese Tractor Acquisition

Manufacturing.Net - August 27, 2007

MOLINE, Ill. (AP) Deere & Co., one of the world's largest farm equipment makers, said Monday it completed its acquisition of China's Ningbo Benye Tractor & Automobile Manufacture Co. Ltd.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The acquisition, originally announced in June, expands John Deere's product line for Chinese farmers and boosts the company's capacity to produce low horsepower tractors, the company said.

In China, Deere currently builds tractors in the 60 to 120 horsepower range at a joint-venture factory in Tianjin, while Benye mainly builds tractors in the 20 to 50 horsepower range, Deere said.

Deere shares fell 28 cents to $129.98 in morning trading.

Hmm. Wonder if they'll make my dream pickup: about 2.900 # (same as a Toyota Tacoma 2wd), about 2.5 liter diesel, front wheel drive, standard height (like a 2wd Tacoma, not jacked up and impractical like 4wd and big pickups), extra cab (but not extra doors, again like Tacoma extra cab), about 6 1/2 foot bed, alloy wheels, sun roof, either electric or manual windows.

Hey All,

Interesting! John Deere = Made in China! Will wonders and the pursuit of the allmighty dollar never cease!

I've no doubt it will be a pretty good tractor. I've thought for several years that the philosophy behind many chinese tractors was probably a good one. KISS - keep it simple stoopidd! Due to the lack of technical support in much of China they've needed tractors that a farmer in the outback of China can fix himself. If John Deere consolidates dealerships and closes stores the same philosophy will be needed in the US unles you like to wait. My grandfathers fixed their own tractors - I guess everything old really is new again.

Benye was the Chinese manufacturer that supplied most of the Rhino brand tractors sold in the USA several years ago. I don't think they actually build cars/trucks may have or had aspirations to that end at some time in the past.

I think you are correct. Lots of those translated or Americanized Chinese company names can be very misleading in regard to actual product.

Dealership consolidation may be great for corporate goals but it's a slap in the face to longtime owners and dealers. I don't know how far or long this can go on before Deere loses its edge against all the new entries into the marketplace. Guess where and by whom those new entries are now being sold.

Or my dream pickup--f350 equivalent that will tow 20,000 pounds and get 30 MPG (I know-too much time in the sun)

Hey All,

My 90 Cummins Diesel 3/4 ton 5 spd 4x4 with 4:10s or 11s which ever is in there gets 21mpg. With a higher rear end I'd be nearer 26 or 27mpg like some guys I've known get. I suspect if you adjusted the pump some more you could get some more mpg. As is I've towed - truck and trailer - 26,000 - of course I wasn't legal (18,500 is the limit IIRC)! :D Scales what scales we don't need no steenkin scales! The truck actually worked a little that time!

Getting back on topic. It will be interesting to see how Chinese John Deere - gotta get used to saying that now - Chinese John Deere tractors sell. I knew a few guys who bled JD green and are now no doubt spinning in their graves!

It may be some time before Chinese JD's hit the states, if at all. Certainly will be interesting though. The Indian JD's seem to be well recieved.

The Indian built JD's have fewer warranty issues than anything else in their line-up...
