Reality check - 4310 you\'ve got to be kidding !

Thanks to everyone who has helped answer Q's in my recent posts re: my first tractor purchase...I have certainly enjoyed this forum over the past 3-4 months, and hate to say goodbye, but I think I must be losing my MIND. A little background -

I started on this process looking at the X series and quickly moved to the 4010....then decided with 3 acres of rotary cutting I wanted a 5' BH, and several threads discussed the 4115 being right on the edge...yesterday when I priced out the 4115, I quickly discovered the 4210 (no HST) was actually less money, and the 4310 just a little more - and NO comparison in the tractor for the $. I have accepted it and it seems to make sense to me (the scary part), but that size tractor on 5-1/4 acres..am I on the path that will have me looking like our Florida Hwy crews with the 6000 series on a postage stamp ? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I think it's up to you. I mowed 3.5 acres with a 335/54, then moved up to a 2210/62. Now both and I the son mow and it still seems to take too long...

I really didn't have the money to get more tractor but if I had my druthers I would have gotten a 4X10 mid-sized chassis so I could more later like a BH, etc. but just could not justify it.

Sounds like you are making a good move. I know that I started on the same path and started off looking at orange and green... figured that I wanted the option of a backhoe. Moved me to the 4210- pretty quick... then price and horse power got me looking at the 4310.
The size of the 4310 was small enough to allow me to go in the trails in my woods to clean things up. I got a LX5 rotary cutter, what grass I have is closer to pasture, certainly not lawn.
In my shopping it just seemed that the 4310 was a good balance for size, price, and my needs and wants.
I have 7 acres, 70% is wooded.
Good luck, I don't think you need to fully lose your mind... but, you will LOVE the toy... tool... just don't smile too much when you start working on it.

Chris:

A big congrats on the new tractor, your going to love it and I think you were wise in the bigger size. Maybe over kill you think....I say nawww you'll find plenty of uses for it and all of a suddon you be the "go to" guy on your block.

Did you buy from up my way?, if so did he treat you good? and when is this thing comming home. Did you end up with 2 or 4 wheel drive, one mower or two and how about that loader.

And about leaving this forum, I think not!!! look at what you have learned in this process and now you can share with other new buyers.

We must have pic's to seal the deal.

PS: Me thinks someones profile needs updating /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Reality check - 4310 you\'ve got to be kidding !

thanks whiskey but haven't signed the contract yet - everything is ready and I'm just in a self-imposed "cooling off" period /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I did really want to post and get feedback just to make sure. And no, I don't plan on leaving the forum...it's just when I look back at my first visit to the Deere dealer in March when I was thinking about a riding mower and where I find myself now, I consider the strong possibility that I've lost my marbles and my patient spouse will finally send me to that room with padded walls /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Actually, any tractor is a pretty large investment, and I would hate to spend that much money and be saying (in 2 years or 2 months) "I wish I would have spent another __ and gotten the bigger tractor..."

I am dealing with Ray...great guy and still getting good pricing. I'm hoping to finalize everything this week...and I'll give you all the details.

Thanks again everyone for the replies and all the help. I would be totally lost without this forum

LOL!!! I think youre very 'normal'. I suspect at least 90% of the readership has been this route. I know I did. Like you I started out looking at the X series. Then to the 40xx...then to the 4115. Thats where I stopped though.

cal123...

I think you are going about this the right way. You've spent time here at TBN. You've obviously done your research. You are honing in on the 4310 which I think is a very appropriate size model for your 5+ acres. When I shopped for my 4710 a year ago, one thing that I kept on hearing from others here at TBN was if you can afford it, buy that bigger tractor. There will always be chores that come up that will warrant the need for the bigger machine. And so, if you feel you've received a good price on the 4310 then go for it. And after you sign that purchase order, never look back. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif You'll have a beautiful tractor that'll last you many, many years and likely your children will inherit it someday to do chores on their places as well as on yours.

So, go for it. Let us know what your decision is. Look forward to your continued participation in the JD forums. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi Jim...

Yep, I too went this route but in the reverse direction. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I started with the 5320 and 5420 ag tractors, one of which I really wanted due to their robust HP and large chassis. The only problematic thing about them was they couldn't fit into my garage or barn buildings. I couldn't afford to build another building just for the tractor, so I had to downscale my desires to the largest size 4x10 that could fit in my garage. This was the 4710. I'm happy with it but still wish I could have more seriously thought about the larger 5000 series tractors.

Re: Reality check - 4310 you\'ve got to be kidding

That must be painful to downsize! Going in the other direction is so much more 'fulfilling'. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I wound up w/ a TC24D...a great tractor. However,
I would have bought the MF1428 but, alas, it wouldnt fit thru the door of my garage. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
