Really confused on this forum

Folks,
I have a lot of hours under my keyboard on forums but this one has me confused
The Icons on the left of the page usually indicate that you have read, not read, contributed, or there has been new info since the last time you read that thread. I also think the color tells how many have looked at that particular post.
Well I'm getting "open letter" icons indicating that I read a thread and I haven't been on the forum since that thread has been posted.
I also get the same threads in order with no up dates.
Is my set up wrong or what??
I'd like to look at "New Threads" and also ones I may have missed.

Don't get me wrong content is A#1, learned a lot, but I'm sure I'm missing some of this valuable info

I think the color is how 'hot' a topic is... responses in a short time make it 'red' and if they are more spaced out it is 'yellow' or whatever that color is.

I think the read/not read part only works when you are logged in which is why I set mine to auto login.

For me the threads that have new content have bold thread titles and have a sort of tan background. Read couple and then hit refresh. This forum is a little different from a lot of other forums in that clicking the title of the thread takes you to the first unread, I really like it that way.
