On the NH at work, we have a hugger on the front that we've been using to pick up big piles of alders that we had cut before the last big storm . The Hyds have been getting slow for awhile now ,but still would work o.k. if you gave it alittle rpm's to speed it up . Today when we took the tractor down the hugger would close but for the longest time would not open . After moving the loader arms up and down a few times and tipping the hugger back and forth ,did it start to open up. Filter gets changed once a year and hyd fluid is full. Any ideas?

Too cold. Your pump is having trouble sucking in the fluid it needs to pump. Try parking it in a warm place overnite and see if that brings it to normal. If so change to a lower viscosity fluid with a higher viscosity index like SUDT.

I thought that the cold might be the culprit, but that this has been slow before it started to get cold out and at least all the hyds worked [slow] until the other day . I'll recommend that we change to a lower viscosity fluid thou, thanks Spyderlk

Check the QD's if you are using them. A relief valve not set right or a stuck relief valve might relieve fluid, and give poor performance. A flow meter and a gage in the system would help out with trouble shooting. A flow meter in-line, would tell you the flow at cold temp, compare to the flow when warm. If you have suction problems, you would perhaps hear cavitation sounds, like chatter. If the fluid warms up and you still have the problem, then it is not the fluid. You can get the fluid analyzed, and if need be, switch to a lower viscosity fluid for the temp in your area.

What kind of temperatures are you working in?

In real cold folks often cover over part of the radiator.:D

Right now we've been working in temp. around 15-30 degs. But even after tractors been running for hours it's still slow .We haven't coverd the radiator before.
JJ said something about hearing a chattering sound . But their's no sound like that . I'm going to check and see just what weight we are using for hyd fluid in it .

I don't think it's anything to do with your fluid. Check your suction strainer. If it looks good, leave it out and see what happens. I worked on an AC 5040 a while back that at least 3 other shops had. All hydraulics were very slow. Suction strainer looked good, but I left it out just to try it. The owner said the thing lifted the FEL faster than it ever did. Got a new strainer, all is good. If you have a problem on the suction side, a gauge won't be much help. Most slow hydraulic problems are on the suction side.

In those temperatures disregard covering the radiator and look elsewhere.:D
