jd 4720
Hello, I have a processed stone driveway with a ton of weeds growing thru stone. We dont want to use pesticides and I am totally confused about purchasing the correct attachment to grade stone and turn over weeds. We have a jd 4720, plenty of hp, would greatly appreciate any advise. Thankyou

Rear blade for shaping dirt, box scraper for moving dirt, land plane for leveling dirt. But each will do a lot of the work of the other, especially with a good operator.

I have tried a rear blade to remove weeds and it is worthless, I have not tried the others though. One thing I did try and was somewhat successful was a soil pulverizer. It takes a number of passes but will eventually loosen up the gravel a little and rip out the weeds. They are expensive though, and using on gravel all of the time will wear out the teeth pretty quickly.

I would suggest a box blade. Put the rippers down, pull in the top link, and make about 4 passes. This idea assumes you have a fairly solid base under all that gravel though...

Everyone with a land plane will suggest one of those as they are probably the best (and easiest) thing for that task...but a box blade is more useful for many other tasks.

Part of my mile-long gravel drive is in an open field, and weeds do pop up in the middle there. However, my box blade takes them out easily. I just run in up and down once and it cuts out the rise where the weeds grow and they're gone for a month or two. A plane may do it too, but it costs more and can't do some of the other job a BB can do. If nothing else, the BB is a great rear weight when I need extra power or leverage.

It's hard to beat the versatility of a good box blade.

Thanks for all your feedback. It seems a BB might be our next tool. What other jobs are they usefull for?

If you tear up the stone to kill the weeds you will be losing your hard packed surface, loosening things up. Personally I prefer to keep the gravel hard packed.

If you don't want to use weed killers, how about just keeping it mowed short?

If you have to ask about implements for this then I suspect you will do more damage than good with a boxblade. I agree with others to deal with the weeds without ripping up your hard packed surface. One of the best ways to eliminate the weeds is to drive your vehicle wheels over the entire driveway surface.
