UHMW polyethylene is far cheaper than Teflon. You'll pay big bucks for Teflon or PTFE. UHMW poly will do fine. The snow plow companies use it for their lighter equipment.

I've got a front mount blade on my tractor and as long as you keep the skid shoes properly adjusted, you'll keep the wear to a minimum on the edge. Plastic will certainly wear faster than steel. Since you have a concrete drive, you probably don't have much of a crown on the grade. That should help to keep the wear even as well.

BTW, if you get the snow to pack to those washboard icy bumps, put the steel edge against the pavement. It will pop off that icy stuff in a jiffy.

For years snow plows have had steel edges, hardened at that. Me thinks some of us worry too much.

Andy

That's true, but they are also spring loaded so that when they catch on the seems and cracks of the concrete, they can deflect out of the way and not damage the tractor or blade.

Being really cheap, I used a truck tire retread from the side of the highway as my rear blade edge. It was rather difficult to cut with the grinder and cut off wheel, but after three winters, it has hardly worn at all, and doesn't catch on my cracked concrete at all. I left about 2" hanging below the edge of the blade.

I'm a big believer in 'reduce, re-use, recycle'. I couldn't see paying for something that was just laying on the side of the road.

I priced a piece of the UHMW polyethylene from McMaster Carr's.

For a 5 ft by 3 inch and 3/4 thick it was $71.00. A little pricey, but if I get a couple of winters out of it that is much better than shoveling.

Heck, I would easily pay $71.00 to have it shoveled for 2 years. The tractor time is a bonus!
