TonyC - They work fine for asphalt in good condition, but you really have to be careful using them on asphalt that has any holes in it - it's better not to have them at all then.

Hoss, just got to read your post. I don't have the shoes for my blade so I can't tell ya how well they work or if using them with the blade angled would cause any problems. On hard ground it seems to me that they should skid /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif across the surface without gouging it up or digging in much. Just riding on top.

Having the leading edge rolled or curved up would certainly be most desirable. My truck blades have the mushroom style skid shoe that Mark Chalkley first described, but even they will dig in and gouge if the ground is soft. Oh well, two smallfurrows left by the skids is better than to peel up the drive with the cutting edge.
Man, I just hate when that happens. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Done plenty of square holes for carriage bolts in farm equip. but never had the money fer dem der fancy dancy drill bits. Use a torch or stick welder to burn the hole then drive in a carriage bolt or punch with a square shank while the hole is still molten. Been doing dem dat way fer now on to twenty years!/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Plus, you don' hafta know no trigonometry either!! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Sounds very effective to me.

I have the upside down mushroom kind that attach by a round shaft that allows it to slide up and down inside a larger diameter shaft which is attached to the blade. The shaft has a hole drilled in it and you can adjust the shoe height with some large washers by either placing them above or below the sleeve. (A picture really IS worth a 1000 words!) Probably clear as mud by I plow a lot of snow on a combination gravel/blacktop/grass and I''m glad I have them. Saves the grass, saves the blacktop, and allows me to NOT push all the gravel onto the grass!

Also works great for laying a uniform layer of loose material down like sand or gravel. Just set the shoes to leave a 1inch gap and drive. Presto - you have a perfect 1 inch layer left behind. (Can't do that with a box blade although you COULD if it had skid shoes or guage wheels)

Thank you David for your method.../w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

But, at the factory... a huge press just stamps out those darn square holes nicely... /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

Blacksmithing made easy! Now, if I could just remember which of those holes in an anvil is the prichard hole and which is the hardy hole...
