Rear Differential oil drain Plug on \"00\" Series??

I'm looking for input here. I've got a shade over 200 hours on the 6000 and am going to change the rear end gear oil. Issue: Where is the drain plug for the differential?? I have noted while under the rear end (putting on the frame mount for the Bradco 511 that there is a drain plug looking thing directly on the bottom of the diffy. HOWEVER, I believe I read in service manual that ithe drain plug is on the left axle connection at about 6:30 O'clock (facing the axel from the tire side). Anyone done this yet??? PS: Reason I'm changing is the book says about now is a good time (200-250hrs). I also note some water crystals in the mix so would like to clean it up for the long haul. Thanks for any info. Re: Rear Differential oil drain Plug on \"00\" Series??

Hi Bob, Have spent about 45 minutes trying to locate the plug.
In my service schedule in operator’s manual, under transmission, there are two drains. I believe the one you are looking for is on the bottom of the "drop box", (a round housing). The plug faces to the rear of machine.

I finally figured out that our services schedules must be different…I think. Mine, a 2005 6500 4wd, calls for changing the transmission fluid at 50 hrs. and then every 1000 hours. The instructions call for draining the fluid from two drain plugs. One being on what I call the “maine” transmission, and the other as described above.

I am making no claims to the accuracy of the above info. It is just the product of a mechanically challenged old guy, with glasses, a round belly, and a baldhead. And that is not even mentioning my lineage“ski”.

Anyway, I hope it helps.

M-P: I checked the service manual and the parts manual tonight and I believe the plug I mentioned in my first post is the correct one. It resides just in front of the axle centerline (maybe 2 inches or so). It appears to be directly between the axle centerline and the front edge of the bottom of the differential. I'll try and check it out tomorrow. thanks for the look! BobG in VA

Re: Rear Differential oil drain Plug on \"00\" Series??

I dunno. I can't find any reference to this plug in all my manuals. Nor does the service schedule for my tractor list this at all. I did a visual search, also with no results.

So, either I'm being "nummar than a hake", and missing it all around, or out tractors differ in this respect. I'd like to think it is the latter, but the former is certainly not out of the question.

Re: Rear Differential oil drain Plug on \"00\" Series??

OK on the 4500/5500/6000, the drain plug is a 17mm magnetic plug that is located just ahead of the centerline of the axle housing. There is a "cutout" that it sets in. I was afraid that it would be in so tight that I wouldn't be able to get it loose. It was no problem. Used a 1/2" breaker bar with the 17mm socket. Came from the factory with semi tacky thread "goop" on the plug. I bought 7 gallons 80-90 weight GL-5 gear oil as the unit is spec'd at 6.3 gallons. WOW has gear oil gone up!! I paid $70 for it at TSC ($10/gallon!). It all came out OK but it took quite some time to replace the load as the filler hole is only about 3/4inch and you have to use a flexible funnel to get to it. Funnel's tube was only about 1/2 inch so I just took my time with a 1/2gallon plastic pitcher. Done deal. I'm good for another 1000hours. BobG in VA
