My JD750 does not have power steering and with a full loader bucket it is a beast to steer. I had looked at several options for ballast, making a concrete ballast weight, buying used dumb bell weights to put on a bar on the lower three point or purchasing a ballast box. Also considered a box scraper and bolting some extra steel plating to the sides for weight but, with the blazing 20 HP my tractor has it may overload the ability of tractor to pull a box scraper with that much weight when scraping.

The last week I ran across a local add on Craigslist for a rear scoop for $250, I purchased it for $150, has a nice rust patina but all workable parts. It adds about 300 pounds by itself and improves steering somewhat even empty, it can be filled with dirt rocks or I may get some quick mix concrete and just wet the bags down to have some quick additional ballast to stack in the scraper box, looks like it would hold six or eight bags easily for a total of around 700-800 pounds for traction and steering improvement. In addition the scoop is capable of some very light digging and scraping or just dragging to smooth out areas, only about 36" wide so it takes a few passes. Overall I am pleased with the bargain weight box that has some other utility.

I've been using the rear dumping scoop as ballast for years. A full load of wet soil is a bunch of weight. and easily put aside when not needed. That is, the extra weight needs no storage or handling, just dump it back where it was scooped up. Filling a scoop bucket full to the top while driving forward is the easy way. 3Pt lift arms aren't really made for pushing.

Enjoy!

Nice find! My machine changes completely when I pick up the 600lb tiller for ballast. It is a totally different machine. I will not do loader work without it. Too easy to get the rear end off the ground.

I have a rear scoop that currently sits unused. I plan on making a plywood form and casting a concrete block that fits perfectly in the scoop. Plan on putting a lifting eye and some means to restrain it in place. Should make a very nice ballast block and I can remove the concrete weight if I want to use the scoop as a scoop in the future.
