I'm seriously looking at purchasing a Grand L5240. I know I want R1 (Ag) tires on it. But using the "Build My Kubota" feature on Kubota's web site gives you two size choices for R1 rear tires: 14.9 x 26 or 13.6 x 28. I think the 14.9 x 26 is the more common choice. However I believe the John Deere 4x20 series uses 13.6 x 28 size.

Anybody have any thoughts on which size would be "better" or advantages/disadvantages of either? My property can be quite wet in the spring (hence my preference for the traction of ag tires) so I am thinking the wider (14.9 x 26) tires might be the better choice for me.

Also, on Kubota's web site it refers to the 13.6 x 28 as "R1 AG" and the 14.9 x 26 as "HI POWER LUG AG". Anybody know what that is all about???

Accoding to the salesman both sizes are "standard" and no price difference. Interestingly, the front tire size (9.5 x 16) stays the same with either rear size.

I would go with the wider tire.

The 13.6x28 is a more common size. Tires are easier to find in that size

That would mean that both rear sizes are very similar in overall diameter,
maintaining the correct MFWD lead ratio. Kudos to Kubota for providing
more tire choices.

I agree with CRANK that 13.6x28 are the common size for this class of
tractor, but I would opt for the wider ones. You should get thousands
of hours out of your rear tires if you keep them off pavement.

So if the front tires are the same size with both sizes of rear tires does that mean the sidewalls are "taller" and/or the tread "thicker" on the smaller diameter 14.9 x 26 tires to maintain the correct MFWD ratio?

There is a higher side wall on a 14.9 tire then a 13.6 tire per manufactuer although from one make to the other the diameter size also normally changes.

I don't know about this tire, but Ag tires differ in lug design and tread depth with some being more aggressive than others.

Here is just one example; our old CX80 beside the M8540.

I would go down and look at both choices. Most dealers should have them. Also if it's a good dealer he'll know which will work better for your area and what you will be doing. I would say wider will float more and if your ground doesn't have a bottom to it then they may be a good choice. The narrower ones would work better if your mud tends to have a bottom and you just need to get down to it for traction. The wider ones should also be better on the lawn and they should hold more fluid (if you plan on filling them for ballast).

I'd look for the wider tires also - but if you're considering chains for ice & packed snow, then be sure to check inside and top clearance.

I know this is an old thread but which tires did you choose?
