My manual says adding water (75% filled) to my 17.5L-24 rear tires adds 515 lbs of ballast (with 2 lbs of CaCl per gallon of water)

Is that 515 lbs per tire, or total?

At 8 lbs per gal of water, 515 lbs would be about 64.4 gals of water (excluding the CaCl), which is almost 13 five-gallon buckets. I doubt you could get that many 5-gallon buckets of water in one rear tire, but not sure.

Anybody?

Yep..it's per tire. It's amazing how much fluid these tires will hold.

My chart shows 55 gallons per tire, based on 75% fill.
the weight for RimGuard is 588.5 lbs per tire. Calcium Cloride would be a little different but pretty close

17.5L-24 55.0 588.5

If you don't mind, what did that cost you- I'm told the product costs around 3 bucks a gal but what about the installation charge?
thx

Rim Guard here at my dealer in MD. was $2.35 a gal. & I did it myself with a "tire valve to garden hose" adapter kit from TSC for around $10.00.

I just showed up with a couple of poly 55 gal drums & they filled them up for me to take back to the farm, was pretty easy with a 12volt sprayer pump & the tire adapter kit with the tractor jacked up on jackstands.

also Rim Guard is around 10.5 to 11 lbs per gal.

About 10 years ago my neighbor ballasted the tires on a 25 horse YANMAR. He was bound and determined to use CaCl because it was cheap. He just replace both rear wheels.

yep, if you are going to use CaCl, suggest you use inner tube as well...bought a used tractor, had CaCl in it, several years later rims rotted out.

Mine have water only, my dealer said.

Wikipedia says: "Calcium chloride, CaCl2, is a salt of calcium and chlorine."

Yikes if that's the same kind of "salt" that rusts metal!?! :confused3:

no but it is a cousin,, regular table salt is sodium cloride, so sodium and clorine atoms. Calcium Cloride is Calcium and Clorine atoms. Sodium and Calcium are not in the same row on the periodic table, but close.. and yes it is a salt, it looks like salt, and tastes like salt. and will rust iron if it can get any oxygen. No oxygen no rust.
