Need your input please:

Thinking of putting a rearview camera rig inside my heated cab for seeing behind me without having to twist around and trying to steer. Cost about 50 bucks, 7" colour HD viewscreen, non-wireless camera, 140 degree field of view, mounted inside looking through rear window, attached to cab wit custom metal brackets.

In general, what do you guys think?..Pros and cons, experience lessons learned (tractor is small 18 hp Kubota with custom-made cab and ducted heater..manual tranny.) Driver is a geriatric.

Thanks, JIX

I would question the quality of a $50.00 camera.I have one on my cabbed Kubota, camera outside and a 5in.moniter.It's just fair, picture quality is not that good, I paid $241.00 for the supposed "wireless" unit which isn't really. You have to power the camera and screen, the transmission is wireless.
Mine was purchased from www.tadibros.com

No need for HD monitor. The camera will not support it, most are pretty grainy at best unless you spend big $$$. Also the bigger the screen the worst the picture. Owners of cars/trucks that have the image in the rear view mirror 3.5" size find the image is much worse when they install a navigation unit with a 7" screen and switch the camera to it. I think you will have to spend a lot more than $50 to get a decent unit.

I think where wireless would be the way to go is if you wanted to monitor something like a horse in a horse trailer. If the trailer has a battery or there is a battery feed to the trailer then wireless would make the install easier. No real benefit on a car/truck or tractor. Plus hardwired will not have any interference problems. The only other benefit of wireless might be if you have multiple cameras. Say front and rear and you can just power up the one you want to use and power down and power up a different one to switch between cameras with one monitor.
I agree with you, $50 will not buy much of a camera system.

You might want to go to the ( A back up camera for $50 ) tread by 94Bullitt as many seem to be very satisfied with those set ups . I am going to put one in my cab for this winter also .

If you are trying to steer by a camera/screen, you'll find the lack of depth perception a hazard. That's why the in car back up cameras have those lines on the screen.

Yes, I do agree about image quality, but the photo that Bullitt posted impressed me. I ordered the same unit(s) for that reason. I agree that wireless systems have interference issues.

My 50 bucks is not enough money to get anxious about, if the thing is junk. I wanted to try the concept of the idea at low cost...plus I have seen some pretty expensive gear that WAS junk.. Bullitt has done me a favor, by pioneering a cheap system..and he deserves thanks for that.

No, I do not think one should safetly depend solely on the camera for operation. It only can tell you if you are going in the correct path. I still intend to place rearview mirrors to give me other visual clues..and to turn and look behind me in a critical area, of course. I do not operate my tractor if there are persons, or other objects nearby, especially with a man-eating snowblower running.

Tractor machinery is dangerous if you are blase' about using it. It is dangerous whenever it is running. It is very much like gun safety. Mistakes, carelessness..kills people.

I did install the $50 special (see 94bullit thread). The 7" monitor supports 2 cameras so I installed a 2nd cam on the front for use.with my forks. It's not HD quality but for $50 it works well.

For $50, why WOULDN'T you put one in?? Worst case, you'll have to look over your shoulder anyway. I would think the biggest problem would be getting snow on the camera - it does tend to blow back in your face roughly 100% of the time...

If finding a place for the 7" monitor is problematic in a smaller tractor, you may want to try one of the cameras that is in a rear view mirror. I use my inside the cab mirror quite a bit and you said you wanted mirrors. Just a thought.
