Hi All,
Need help. I have a Vermeer Rebel 5410 of about 4 years (~3000 rolls) and it has started to leave about 12ft of twine on the ground after dumping the finished roll. Bales perfectly, great tension, clean cut on the knife but almost seems to unroll this 12 feet. Major problem when moving the roll to the lot or trailer because the tractor tire will run over the twine causing twine to be removed from the roll. Any ideas? About to pull my hair out and my dealer simply states "all balers do that". Well, up until this year mine never has. I can understand a small amount left over hanging from the roll but this is too much. Help and thanks.

First of all, welcome to TBN. :welcome:

Do you have the Accu-Tie monitor, or is it a manual tie baler? I believe that you can adjust the twine settings with the monitor. Check your manual.

Also, this year I've had some of that with my JD baler, but it's just short grass. (and not much of that) With the short hay, it's hard to get a square edge that will hold the "end wraps" on the roll.

BTW, why don't you take a minute to edit your "details" and list your general location. That will help members better know how to answer your questions.

Thank you and I found where to update my details/location (South MS).

I have the Accutie and I've tried adjusting my twine settings at both ends of the spectrum (Start Wraps, Center Wraps and End Wraps) to no avail. I was in short grass for the first cuttings but now into good, thick bahalia (I was hoping that had something to do with it).

I have ~65 acres on the ground now so going to try fooling with the tension and knife timing(not sure it's adjustable) today and we'll see how that goes. I haven't changed anything but who knows.

I am having the same issue with my Vermeer 605. I was told to increase twine tension. When I tried to do that I found that the tension plates had a groove worn in them. (8000 bales) They were tightened down but the twine just slipped right through them.

I finished up my first cutting and fixed them so that I get good tension on the twine. Unfortunately, I have not used it since the repair. Unless it rains here in Texas I may not get a second cutting this year.

Let us know how your adjustments turned out.

Thanks JD, I'll give it a look. I noticed my tie arm "jerks" when the knife cuts so maybe the twine is in a bind from a groove somewhere. The dew should be dry over here in about an hour and I'll be starting.

God bless you guys out there in TX. I keep hoping one of these tropical depressions (no damaging winds just heavy downpour) will settle over you all for about a week. Here in South MS we went through a minimal 8 week lack of rain and it was awful so can't imagine how bad it is out there.

Thanks again

Well, 150 rolls later and I think I found it. It was a groove thing after all but not in my tension plate. I found the end of my tie arm where the twine comes out of the holes had very deep grooves so I moved the twine over to the other two holes and problem solved (so far). Very concerned why after only 3000 rolls i have such deep grooves but at least I'm back in business. Thanks for the help.

Glad to hear that it is working better.

I have heard that some twine is more abrasive than others. My baler even had grooves in the porcelain guides.

Are you using poly (plastic) twine? It will generally wear the guides quicker than sisal.
