Kubota L175
Greetings,
I have on old (circa 1973) Kubota L175. I do not know how many hours are on it, as I got it used, and the tach cable was broken. The previous owner didn't know how long it had been broken either.

The engine is very hard to start, and it doesn't seem to have a lot of power, and it is burning oil.
My question is: Is it worth it to rebuild the engine, to look for a rebuilt engine and install it, or to just wait till it dies?

Thanks,

OldGrayOwl.

How much value does it have now what value will it have it rebuilt if it still operates ok but a little weak might be your sign time to upgrade. sometimes when you have a 1000 dollar vehicle and you spend 500 dollars on it still might only be worth only 1000 dollars the only way to get money out is keep using it and hope it last forever. Wish you well

The L175 engine should be easy rebuild if you have experience in rebuilding.
First check compression then fuel pump and injectors.
burning oil could be valve guides. but since you will have the engine apart might as well do good job rings and bearings replacement clutch .
As you remove parts look closely how put together timing marks to cam shaft to main crank and the engine timing marks for #1 TDC. relation to diesel pump.
Unless visible heavy wear may be no need to have the cylinder bored to over size . same with crank shaft.
I had a L175 good tractor for small tractor use. then the starter blew up shorted out the battery that spilled acid all over engine area.
The $600.00 starter made decision to trade in for larger tractor.

Good little tractor. Saw one at auction was to beat up for me. Price a used engine at one of the tractor recycling centers and you may have a better idea of what to do. Your tach cable lasts about 400 hours so you are correct in not knowing where you are at. A 2000 Ford used for mowing at the local schools sold with 8900 hours showing on its meter. The six hundred dollar starter sounds high, but a crank at 1500 seemed high to me.
