hi there ,hope this is in the correct place as its my first forum post, having just rebuilt a ferguson grey and gold 23c diesel engine ,after 6hours of running im getting oil blowing from exhaust manifold ,roughly a tablespoon of oil for an hour of run time .this started a soon as engine came up to temp for first time .oil pressure is good but drops lower when engine is at hot idle. All bearings were replaced plus new pistons, rings, liners.new valvesand springs ,injectors reconditioned. Also got a noise from timing chain ,removed cover twice to check ,replaced new chain and tensioner but still no difference nothing obvious other than the first tensioner was worn slightly . The timing sprockets are new and i had to file them slightly to get fitted onto crankshaft and camshaft ,just wondered if anyone had run into these issues

Are you sure that's oil coming out of the exhaust? It sounds like "wet stacking" to me. It's a dirty black oily substance that is unburned fuel residue and lampblack carbon. It will disappear when you work the tractor and get it up to operating cylinder temperature (prolonged idling will not get you high EGT's).
Until you rings seat properly, you should expect some oil consumption and a tablespoon an hour doesn't sound excessive at this point.

have you rebuilt the oil pump and made sure the relief valve was not stuck open. Bearing clearences and oil pump clearance and and relief valve position (spring tension, stuck open valve)) control oil pressure. Assuming your bearing clearences are correct, I'd suspect the oil pump and the relief valve particularly if you did not inspect the pump/relief valve.

hello jerry, thanks for reply,as you say hopefully the rings will tighten up ,it looks and feels like oil and if u run it with manifold removed it spits out the exhaust ports , i use a tin under the exhaust u bend to collect the drips when running .The oil pump is new but i didnt look at the oil filter relief valve, its gasket is leaking so i will check it over later. As you seen in my first post i was getting a terrible noise from timing chain cover ,tapping lightly and faster at speed ,well removed cover for 3rd time and ran engine to discover it was the new oil pumps drive gear mating poorly with crankshaft gear ,u could see wear on it already ,so replaced it with old pump gear and they come together far better ,cover on ran engine and no noise ,hope thats it ,when i had the gears off ,if you rolled them together the old gear ran perfect against the crank gear but the new oil pump gear sort of wobbled as they came round ,possibly angles not machined same , wasnt OEM pump ,parts are bit of a hit and a miss but usually if you pay for OEM spares its a hit . I think this is a quick reply but i tend to use 20 words when 2 will do , ,been working at tractor off /on since march 2013.

You might try going to Yesterday's Tractors web site. There are a few people in the Harry Ferguson Forum that have some experience with the 23C engine and they can robably give somedirect advice since they have experience with it.
