I do, I'm over 20K GCVW, so DOT numbers required. It's not the GVWR of the trailer, it's the total GCVW that determines if you need DOT numbers. 20 is the magic number here in Michigan.
Ya, 26k GCWR at the federal level for a CDK although states may be less. I was just saying that with a 1 ton truck it it could go either way depending on the GVWR of the trailer.

I certainly don't mind having them on the door. Local Barney Fife's around here bust lawn care outfits pulling trailers constantly for not having DOT numbers displayed. I heard it was a 150 buck fine too.

Both doors, right under the farm name / logo

I tried the U-Ship thing to bring my chipper back from MN to Ont Can. All too expensive and would have paid even more for a customs broker, so did it myself.

I wouldn't say that below a certain cost is a red flag. Sure, no one could do that business "regularly" below a certain amount. But occassionally yes. And it allows them to (possibly) right off equipment. Maybe, they are even doing it just for something to do.

To me, (U-Ship) felt like putting a wanted AD out for something and everyone who responds is SKY HIGH.

Must be a regional thing. I monitor almost everything coming and going within 500 miles of me. Almost never do bids even go for a dollar a mile and that’s before all of Uship’s fees (20% to the shipper, off the bid price). Running a load for less than 80 cents per mile is not possible, unless you’re not running legally or have a huge income from other sources. But math is hard and most people can’t do it.
