I'm interested in buying a UTV of some type for the following activities on a 100 acre woodlot in NH. Many of the logging roads on the property are too rocky and rutted to allow me to use my 6x4 Gator as it gets hung up on the pan. The 6x4 also is useless in any snow what so ever even with chains. Here is what I'm looking to do.

1. During spring, summer and fall: haul my hand held saw mill and guide beams into the woods to turn smaller logs into lumber. The mill and beams fit easily in my current Gator bed so something about 4' x 4' is acceptable.

2. Occasionally use a winch to move logs and other heavy materials around. I have a Warn hitch on the 6x4 that works okay but I'll equip the new one with one of larger capacity.

3. Do any of the current UTVs work adequately in snow that is more than 6 inches deep? I have a JD garden tractor with a 4' two-stage snow thrower but I'm getting tired of freezing you know what off during storms. I need either the snow thrower or a blade to clear about 150' of drive and parking area (gravel). I don't need a plow truck (been there - done that) as the drive is too narrow and I need to push things back and up high. I have a NH 1710 with a plow blade to use in real emergencies. I know the UTVs don't have a PTO to run a snow thrower but I could probably get by with a blade for much of the winter.

4. General hauling of firewood, gardening things, brush, etc.

I've been looking at the JD XUV as a replacement but I'm confused at the differences between it and the HPX (is it just the rear suspension? - I haven't been to my local dealer yet - tending a sick wife). I've also thought about buying a used ATV and equipping it with some kind of cargo box but I never have good luck with used equipment like that so I'm thinking new. The RTV sounds nice but I'm not sure I want to deal with the problems I see reported. I looked at the Kawasaki Mule once and was not impressed and didn't like the dealer either. The JD dealer is okay - I've purchased from them before. Any other recommendations out there would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't rule out the rtv because of this one issue. This problem seems limited to the 1100 with tracks.
RTV's are well made machines with many accessories and options available.
XUV diesel doesn't have a clutch enclosure so it may not be so good in snow.
The gas XUV is a nice unit with lots of options.
The Ranger XT is the fastest and quickly becoming one of the most popular utvs.
Rhinos are nice, the locked rear diff is killer on lawns. The payload is only 400lbs.
Dealer support is very important with any utv.

Honestly either XUV should do the trick for you. Gas having an edge with the clutch enclosure. But driving through deep snow is nothing like deep water, it's not going to do much with the belt. However if you get more then 2-3 inches or so over the ground clearance of the vehicle you're going to have problems in the snow. You'll sink down in and if you lose momentum and as soon as it stops for a split second and the tires spin you're dead. The snow is gone from under you and you're wheels just spin freely with nothing to grip. That's why I say go for the XUV is because of the extra clearance.

Get the XUV. Now that we settled that.......

The only question is gas or diesel. If you don't already own another diesel engine, then get the gas. If have other diesels, then it might be worth getting the diesel gator. I have the gas and it is not cold blooded. The fuel injection fires up instantly when you turn the key at low temps. Well for me low temps are anything under 30 degrees.

A factory skidplate is about $75 extra, but you will already have about a foot of clearance with the XUV. More than about everything else out there. Aftermarket snow plows are way cheaper than JD models and can use an existing winch on the front.

I would also consider the Polaris Ranger XP. Don't own one but if I was buying one, it would be one of the front runners. Lots of power, great suspension, good tow and haul capacity, very good clearance, 40+ mph, all 4 wheel drive and seats 3. Newest version, called the Crew has an extra seat and will carry 6 persons.

With 100 acres of woods I would be thinking about a Toolcat with a snow blower/plow, bucket, grapple, stump grinder and a tree shear (if one works with the Toolcat). I think a version with a 3 point hitch is also coming out if that is critical for you. Maybe even a compact track loader would be fun.

RTV *** Equip with a Warn Tabor

Warn Tabor Magnum 9 Electric Winch

We know of a dealer down here in Louisiana that is installing these on the RTV's now.... Has a fabricator making all the mounting brackets to do this...

The only trouble I've ever heard of with the RTV,was running tracks on the machines ..... and they still don't know the whole story on that >>>>

You want a workhorse, look close into the RTV, it's strong, heavy cargo capacity, and very dependable !!!!
