red blood 'spots in white of the eye

Buddy of mine called me and aked about a red 'blood' spot in the white of his eye that he found upon waking this am. I didn't know what to tell him.. other than to call his eye doc.

Got me curious though. Anyone have any idea what these are? what to do? any links?

Ok.. I think I found it:

Subconjunctival hemorrhage (bleeding): Generally, this condition is painless. Vision is not affected. The eye will have a red spot of blood on the sclera (the white part of the eye). This occurs when there is a rupture of a small blood vessel on the surface of the eye. The area of redness may be fairly large, and its appearance is sometimes alarming. It is not dangerous and generally goes away slowly with no treatment.

My son was a diabetic and he would get bleeding in eyes as a result. Seems when sugar level is high all sorts of problems come up. For you friend, gotta get to a doctor. As we all know it's better safe than sorry. The question is; how many of us do what we know is best for us?

Sounds right - as long as there is no change in vision. It is so red because the conjunctiva (the clear covering over the eye) has such a high oxygen tension; the subconjunctival hemorrhage doesn't turn blue like bruises at other sites.

Well, that was my default answer.. IE.. see a DR.. eyes, ears, (private parts).. anything that don't seem right.. get it checked before it falls off!

You never been so sick that you throw up so hard that you pop blood vessels in your eyes? It scares the bajeebers out of you when you look in the mirror.

Your advice regarding a Dr. is the best.

While I didn't pop BV in my eyes.. i have had food poisoning bad enough that I actually brused my ribs or chest area from the dry heaves.. hurt to breathe for a week after that... not to mention that you get to that point where you really would rather be 'dispatched' that continue on...

Little OT, but I got a chuckle thinking about something we laugh about at work sometimes.

Jerry Clower story, old boy climbs up a tree to get out the Opossum. Gets up there and finds a BobCat......

There is wailing and scratching and carrying on, he hollers down to bubba below to shoot!

Bubba hollers back he might hit the guy in the tree...

Guy in the tree hollers back (and this is the part we use at work)
