red seal / continental eng.. need exh manifold BAD

At work we have a stationary power unit.. it is a continental / red seal engine.. mid 40's era I would guess.

Number on the block under the exh manifold are:

F 400 A 421 / S

CWC

on the other side ( starter side )

J316

The manifold has been welded on, brazed.. had screws screwd in it.. had the carb flange changed.. etc.. etc.. over the last few decades to keep this old thing going. manifold is now well past shot and I need to find another one... metal is less than 1/8 thick in most places... still runs as the intake webbing is good.. however.. it's not right.

Any help would be appreciated!!!

well worst come to worst you could fabricate one from square and round tubing, i did that once to a continental engine, no idea what model or size, that was in a pump. needed it working fast and parts wernt readily available, if at all. came out pretty nice, used some 3/8 plate for the mounting surfaces and milled them all flat after fabrication. has been on the engine for a few years now, havent looked at it up close but have seen the pump being used a few places so i would imagine its still held together ok

I have deffinately thought about that route. I have a ho-made manifold on a small 9 hp flathead at home.. made from round thick walled pipe and some flanges.. just migged together.. never has had a problem.. though a tad labor intensive /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Soundguy you must have an exotic system. I thought continental engines were used in airplanes. Shows my ignorance on different engine placements.

My Dad had some very old forklifts with flathead continental engines. I think the engine no. was stamped on the cyl head up by the water thermostat outlet on a flat spot. Ours were F226 as I remember. Some old lincoln welders had a contienental engine. I don't have a part source and hope the best for you, 'cause I been there. bjr

6 CYL? I believe Oliver, Massey Harris used continental's also jf you can identify c.i. of this engine (6 cyl), Kaiser and Frazer parts are plentiful if it is a 226 c.i.

Bobby Fields is down there in Leesburg now I think, I do not believe he has hit the road yet.

Anyway, you might give him a shot at reworking it and bringing it up to speed.

Last time I was there he was showing me some new repair type inserts to fix cast with, and he is also set up to do the metal spray repairs.

Obviously I am not looking at the thing, but I would bet some well placed repair pieces, then metal spray the entire surface to build back to uniform thickness and mold everything together would get you going.

I am very unfamiliar with the models used, but I believe that a lot of the airboat guys used Continental engines as well. Might be worth asking about.

Continentals were used everywhere.

I have an allis chalmers G with a N 62 contenintal in it.

In any case , it is a flat 4. There is a long number on the head I didn't get.. but will go back to find it.
