I'm trying to start Bermuda hay in Central Texas (Austin) with seed and with NO rain ! I can't wait any longer to seed, so have decided to irrigate my 8 acres by driving my pickup truck carrying 250 gallons of water in a tank as long as it takes to get it established.
Can anyone tell me how to construct an irrigator with maybe a 10 foot piece of PVC with some nozzles as a boom, and a pump connected to my truck battery (kinda like the boom irrigators you see the highway department using) ?
What kind of pump do I need ?
And maybe I don't need any nozzles, just 1/8 inch holes drilled in the pvc every foot or so ?
Thanks for any and all input and suggestions.

Bob

I would use 2 to 4 inch pvc pipe cut it in half and put a T in it to hook up to your water tank/pump. Cap both ends but keep them where you can open them up to flush the debris out if you sprinkler holes plug up. Then instead of holes I would make horizontal slits in the pipe using a ziszes(2 points off for spelling) wheel, so the water would fan out as it sprayed!

you need to be careful. but double check ATV boom sprayers, they normally have a 12V pump. that you can hook up to your battery on your truck.

i say careful, due to the alternator may not have enough juice to keep the battery charged. granted it should, but if ya run say A/C, fans on high, head lights on high beam, radio full blast. you use up electricity and it has to come from some place. but you should be able to get by just fine.

if ya ran cables off of battery, you could put an inline fuse and a switch inside the cab. to be able to turn on/off pump.

goto Koiphen.com and do a search for "spray bars" you will find spray bars being used for "trickle towers" and micro screens placed in settling chambers.
WorldWide Koi Club - Home -> pond building -> filters or diy. (been some time) there are man DIY builds of spray bars. listed there.

spary bars. are made out of pipe most of the time PVC pipe, with caps on the ends. and then smallest drill bit possible used, for some things. while larger holes used for other things.

example. say you placed a outlet on lowest portion you can on the tank. ((most likely using a "uniseal" vs a bulkhead fitting, so you can get it closer to bottom of tank if placing it on the side of it)) and then a pipe through the uniseal, then to a Tee with some pipes out each end for some booms. you could do this with little bit bigger holes. and just run the truck up and down and let the water gravity flow out of the holes.

if you do above, your best bet is making a single line of inital "holes" and see how it does. if not enough water comes out, ((more so when tank is getting near empty)) drill a couple more holes. this will most likely be trial and error and a couple pieces of pipes hacked up and tossed away. till ya find something you like.

you will most likely want say a 3" or 4" outlet on tank, then 2" to 3" booms if you do the gravity flow of water thing.

if you are wanting to use a 12v pump. and have more of a spray pattern. vs trickling of water, like above would give you. i would suggest making 2 rows of smallest size drill bit you can find. and do the trial and error of above. of drilling some holes initially, then as needed drill some more holes.

for this setup. 1.5" to 2" booms should work. you could use something smaller. but the problem comes down to getting even flow of water across the booms. and you may find it that the center of the booms has less holes while further towards ends have more holes.

if you want to pay the cash, you can get the little "spray nozzles" that are self taping, (drill a hole in the pvc pipe, and twist in (will be tight)) to get a misting effect. ((actually you should be able to pick up "misters" and adjust them for patterns and/or use a drill bit to make them send out more water.))

===========

others would most likely state better. but i would most likely avoid fine misting. due to loss of water to the air. vs going to the ground.

thinking about it, you might be able to hit a local scrap yard. and take the spray bars out of some "trickle towers" errr forget the names the boxes that set up on your roofs and water runs down through fins to cool your house vs A/C units.

a rubber fitting with pipe clamps, or a union, would be suggested to be placed between boom and some sort of clamp construction that holds the main pipe on the truck. that way you can either undo a pipe clamp and slilp boom off, or undo a union and take the boom off. or put male/female ends on each boom side. so you can just screw/unscrew. the booms in and out.

standard water plumbing male/female fittings have a slight bevel in them. or rather cone shape. that makes them fit tight. with only a few turns. but you could also use electrical male/female fittings, that screw together further. but if you keep a few rolls of pipe tape on hand. it should be a problem.

note electrical male/female fittings can be used to make a bulkhead fitting through side of a plastic container. though with all the bouncing and jacking around for what you are wanting. i might not trust them. and would suggest a "uniseal" most of the vendors shown at Koiphen.com carry the uniseals.

to note it, you could use a 2" shower drain or 3" or 4" toliet flange. but they tend to not fit tightly on round surfaces. such as on a curved tank side.

Bob, I think you can find what you need at Tractor Supply Co. At least you can look at the complete rigs they sell and see how they're put together and the 12v pumps (usually ShurFlo brand) don't pull enough power to ever be a problem running off your pickup battery.

Hmmm not sure everyone is quite on the right track?? Please excuse me while i convert size and volume to Australian versions! (hahah) 8 acres is about 3 and a bit Ha, new grass to get established in the first 4 weeks will take about an inch a week but if its windy say 30mm. Now as long as my ag maths is still working......? 30mm on 3ha equals 300,000 litres or 75,000 gal per week. Thats 300 tank fulls, have you got time to apply 40+ tanks per day? Even if you give the whole area 1/2 inch a week it'll still be 18 tanks a day.

Good Luck

I didn't do the numbers, but that is the exact same thing I was thinking.

+2, That's allot of water haul'n. I would sprig it one acre at a time if I had to water it that way.

Wow ! Thanks to everyone for the amazingly quick, thorough and helpful responses. And sorry, I should have been more clear about the project. Over <time> I will do all 8 acres. But for now I'll only be doing the front pasture about 2.5 - 3 acres until it can be lightly grazed while keeping my mini Herefords on the other "half". And initially I'm most concerned about just wetting the exposed dirt to keep the seed from blowing away and kick starting it as its getting late to plant and I can't wait for rain. But I'm hoping I'll only have to do it a little for the next week or two until we get some moisture. And I may have to use the setup for awhile in between rains until things get established. I know, I know, I'm an optimist about rain in Texas ! Thanks again for all the information folks !

I hear that Governor Perry has issued a proclamation that Texans are required to pray for rain to fight the fires, so hold a few days on your irrigation project.
