I pull my Mahindra 2615 in my garage bay under my house quite often & each time I have to fold down the ROPS.
Are all of the bolts, nuts, snubber bolts, & pins, & chains nessasary?
Why can't I just go with the pivot pin, the pin that locks the ROPS in position, & the locking pin though the end of that so it won't fall out?

Remember.. redundent backups are only necescary when the primary fails.

safety chute is redundent.. but when you are falling toward the earth and your main chute fails.. you are glad to have the safety chute..

Probably some of that stuff is CYA for the company due to liability issues.. but on the other hand... how much do you trust un-engineering a safety device that may be the only thing between you and your 6000# cast iron girlfriend when she rolls over on you?

Another thing to think about is liability on your part.. what if you 'adjust' the factor rops, then get killed due to a rops system failure. Once the corporate attorneys find that you made 'modifications' to the rops.. it's likely that their liability will evaporate substantially... similarly, if the neighbor or anyone else uses your machine and wer killed... your modifications to the tractor safety system will probably factor heavilly into the monetary damage award.

it's your tractor.. Pay up your life insurance, and get that personal umbrella liability policy that way your familly might still have a roof over their head and can afford food if your modification goes south and you cease to be.. or someone else ceases to be.

( alright guys.. i refrained from using the bussload of nuns and orphans as a worst possible scenerio situation.. so i expect some slack here! ;) )

Welcome to the reality of a society where attorneys and insurance companies have figured out ways to make money on everything you do, don't do, or even think about doing or not doing. Don't know what the percentage would be if we figured the cost of everything we do or buy because of this, but suspect it would be substantial.

He modifies his ROPS, rolls the tractor down a hill, the ROPS fails, so instead of the tractor laying on its side, it just keeps tumbling down the hill faster and faster and lands on a busload of orphans going on a field trip escorted by the nuns that care for them. Fairly obvious thing to happen if you modify any safety equipment.

Can you get on video?? that would be a sight to see, All the orphans screaming, pointing out the window at the ever increasing size of the tractor, The nun cursing the unapproved modifacations to the rops, the little yellow puppy that gets creamed just before the tractor hits the rainbow colored micro bus.( wow this cold medicine has me seeing things)

Mossroad pretty much gave it up in a nutshell.

At one of my engineering jobs, when we designed something, we always tried to plan for extenuating circumstances vs company liability.

We had a 'worst possible scenerio' (WCS ) test for each situation.. IE.. what's the worst that could happen at the worst time, and what would the companies laibility involvment be based on what happened.

A 'bussload of orphans and nuns' was a widely used 'WCS' as the 'victom' of the test. Partially because they would have a good chance at getting a sympathetic jury, and there might be an astronomical damage award if there were proven negligence ont he manufacturers part.. thus we tried to make designs that showed due dilligence... If we came up with something that stood up to the 'nuns and orphans' test.. it was usually a shoe-in..

Admittedly.. it's an extreme WCS.. but... if you look at the nightly news.. sometimes it's not too far off from reality... remember the drunk fairy captain? or the Union Carbide disaster decades back?
