However, we were unable to find one anywhere and finally went to a Pet Exhibition and bought a Chihuahua pup from an Arkansas Kennel (puppy mill, I guess).
Bird,
What do you consider to be a puppy mill ??
Oops, I'm sure no expert. I guess
this website definition is as good as any. To me, personally, a "puppy mill" is a place where dogs are kept for the sole purpose of producing pups to sell for a profit. Whether that is good or bad, I'll leave to everyone's own opinion, and maybe it just depends on the conditions those dogs are kept in and the way they're treated.
Until we bought this pup last January, I'd never "bought" a dog before in my life unless you count what I paid at a city animal shelter for a stray the city had picked up. So in shopping for a young Chihuahua (or any other breed, I'm sure), I kept reading everywhere about not buying from puppy mills; the deplorable conditions, the unseen illnesses, genetic defects in their pups, etc., etc.
Well, last January there was a Pet Exhibition at a local city owned convention center, so we went. I won't mention their name, but a kennel in Arkansas had quite a number of pups there, more than one breed, and their own literature showed that they were traveling city to city selling pups. So, to my way of thinking, they are running a puppy mill. However, the pups all appeared to be healthy and happy. Naturally, my wife wanted the first one she picked up and handled. Without examining the pup myself, I asked one of the sales people how much, and the lady immediately told us that one was about half the price of the others and showed us the reason. It appeared to have two tiny hernias. She said their vet told her the pup would grow out of it, but it would be best not to breed her. Since we had no intention of breeding and, of course, intended to have whatever pup we got "fixed" we took a chance. Our vet agreed that she'd probably grow out of it, but said if not, he could repair it when he spayed her.
Well, she's a year old today, was spayed at 12 weeks, there's no sign of any hernia, or any other defect. She loves everyone and everything; humans and other animals both, and she's full of energy. So I guess that particular "puppy mill", at least, isn't a bad one.
