Regreasing deck spindles with Royal Purple

guys,

am about to take my rck54p23bx out of storage & off it's mower deck axles. the deck is new, and i'd like to re-grease it with a higher temp spindle grease . . . i don't know what the dealer used initially . . . but in all likelyhood, the deck will need a good bit.
what are the greasing rules of thumb? do i pump untill i see the old stuff coming out? is there a compatability issue with different types of grease? i have 2 tubes of the royal purple (was told it was good stuff, previously ran it in my commercial zero, which had a blade tip speed of 18,500 fpm). thanks in advance for any and all advice. shrekbelly

I'd go on the lubricants forum to answer the compatibility question. The more I researched it the less confident was that I had any idea which greases are incompatible. It's like the old saying: "I've read so much about the harmful effects of smoking that I've stopped reading." So I just stopped reading about it and buy HP grease at Wally world.

I'm not familiar with that deck, but many spindles have little vents on the casting that the grease will come out when the cavity is fully packed. I don't think I would displace all the old grease by just pumping in new. That all has to be forced past the seal which probably isn't a great idea. Also you're never going to get all the old grease out unless you take it apart.

There was a post reguarding this quite a while back and as I recall, it was recommended that you remove your blades and the grease cups before pumping grease. I did this with my RCK60-24B deck which had many hours on it and I was amazed how much grease it took before any appeared out of the bottom bearing! As far as the type of grease to use.....I'm with Mark. I use the "red" Mystic EP grease from Wallyworld and haven't had any catastrophes yet!
