Cool tractor, Thomas!! Like you said, it would probably get better traction on snow and ice than modern day tractors!! As I always say, most people don't appreciate all the advantages of vintage tractors!!/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I don't know a whole lot about that kind of tractor, Thomas, but offhand I'd say those wheels indicate that it's mostly for outdoor use. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

When they first came out with rubber tires, the farmers were worried that rubber would compress the ground too much. If that were true, we'd all still have tires that looked like Thomas' photo. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

...truth is that they had a lot less flats, but it was hard to get liquid ballast to stay in them./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

My grandfather built a tractor out of a model T and mounted a set of those wheels on the rear.

When he needed to cross the highway in front of his house, he had to place 2x12's on the asphalt. I believe the PA DOT had a chat with him about chewing up the highway. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Do you guys still use studded snow tires up there? I believe they are illegal in Texas because they tend to chew up asphalt. Of course, we don't call 'em snow tires; we call 'em mud grips around here.

The older Farmall tractor also had front and rear steel wheel,and around these parts the rear wheels was commom from late autumn to late spring..better than any tire chain around but very dangerous,for the trike front end setup would rear up do to the traction..so you had one foot near the pedal at all time,and if you had a trailer full of wood etc.. you were extra careful..oh do I remember those days will. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Kinda like sleeping on the ground one night,and the next night your in a king size bed...older tractors vs new tractors.

Up in these parts there a law that one can put studded tires on the first of November,and have to be remove by the end of April,but they don't enforce the law hardly.
