I don't feel that old, but I guess I am. My first job was driving a team of Percherons pulling a hay wagon in from the fields. They put up bulk hay then. Had a big claw that dropped down from the peak of the barn and grabbed it; hauled it up and then tripped and let it fall in the mow. Sometimes I drove the team pulling the wagon and other times walked a single mule that pulled the rope to get the hay up in the barn. Pay was $0.45 an hour - enough to save up and get a J.C.Higgins balloon tire bike.
I'll tell you though... Nothing can get traction in snow like a team of Percheron's One night a schoolbus slide into the ditch and the wrecker couldn't winch them out. Came and got our team and pulled it right out!
Those were the days... Steam trains too. Loved em!
