We had a very sad event in our area a week or so ago. A man was burning some brush.

He poured some of what he thught was diesel on it to light it. Unfortunately, his son-in-law had added gasoline to the diesel can.

When he lit it he got burned over 40% of his lower body. He will survive but will be in the hospital for a long time and I am sure his son-in-law really feels bad about it.

Don't let others use or fill your fuel cans!

Don't always trust what you purchase commerically as diesel fuel either, the most common adulterant in commerically available diesel fuel is gasoline, which lowers the flash point tremendously.

I use gas and diesel in cans. My tractor is used by myself, my Dad, and a friend from time to time. Because of multiple users, the tractor has its own yellow diesel can, with diesel written on it's side in raised letters. Gas stays in gas cans(red cans)...

I have seen gas cans, red of course, diesel cans in yellow, and kerosene cans in blue.

I would like to see an off-color can, for 2-stroke. Mine is in a small red can, so it is gas for sure. But if it gets mixed up with regular gas, there goes the trimmer and chainsaw. I wrap duct tape around the can and mark it with a permanent marker; works for a while...

Mislabeled or incorrectly used gas can be dangerous indeed. It can be expensive even when injuries are not present. My Dad works parts for a Dodge dealer. The see Cummins/Ram pickups often that had gas accidentily put in the tank. It cost over $600 to drain and dispose of the tank contents. Replacing the engine cost lots more!

I have many coustomers that have fuel problems.. Gas or diesel.. around here the culprit is usually the same..

Example #1
grandson helps out grandpa by filling his fuell cans with water, leaves, dirt, bugs, bla,bla,bla.. Grandpa then puts the fuel into his machine... lawn mower, weedeater, tractor..

Example #2
Young, buisy man who works hard and long brush hogging and lawn mantenance. lids on the fuel cans get lost or broken. Dew, rain, and going down the highway with dirt blowing around in the pickup or trailer fills the fuell can full of crap. Crap gets put into the machines.

Know what is in your fuell cans and keep them clean.

Virgil, sounds like you were personally acquainted with my friend and nearest neighbor when I lived on the farm. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Those are exactly the kind of problems he had with letting his grown sons and some of both nearly grown and very young grandsons use his equipment.

Same here....So, if there's a screw up, the only person I can get mad at is me. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Here is a case of the "big gummint" thst so many here abuse coming to my aid. When we got our first CUT we didn't know that there were yellow cans for deisel. We went to the gas station with some new red cans which we had labelled with marker to boldly proclaim Deisel. In Wisc it is illegal to put deisel in gas cans and we were informed of this. We weren't too happy at the time (a mix of having to buy new cans (40 minutes away) and feeling stupid.

But years later I'm certainly glad that I now now about that requirement. I'm sure it's saved me from mistakes. As was pointed out here, mistakes that can be hazardous.

Amen to that!! Of course I have gathered, inhereted quite a few gas and fuel cans, and have them organized according to fuel types for tractor diesel down to weed wacker chainsaw etc.

Well a couple of times I go to my containers and wonder why one is lower than I thought it should be.... Oh well maybe I or some used some for whatever ,Hmmm it wouldn't be a volunteer mowing grass(no-way /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif), Finally find culprit of the missing fuel mystery when I get a frantic call from the wonderful Mrs. Nasty says she was low on gas and had to take some from my supply and poured about 4 gallons of diesel in her van and now it won't run and she has to get back to her school bus for the afternoon route.... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ,Don't read labels don't smell for identification just pour away, Whats a fella to do /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Siphon away we go /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I should have given her the hose /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Nothing like LOVE Ehh???

That's how I color code my cans and I made sure that I explained it to my wife. Don't know if it will do any good though but I'm usually the only one that uses them. All the cans are 5 gallon cans except for 2 x 2 gallon ones I keep for the generator and rotate the contents every 6 months. My 2-stroke mix is kept in 1 gallon cans and marked as such. I may seem **** retentive by differentiating fuel by color and can size but I learned a lesson when my S-I-L filled the riding mower at the farm with diesel from a red can. I have no idea where that came from and she denies all knowledge. She also tried to fill the radiator with diesel once. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Ah well, she's family and you've got to love her.
